Normally I just craft a whole bunch of torches and place them everywhere, it can be very painful and confusing, but also very useful for when I want to be down there

Reminds me of the time I was crammed in the backseat of my friends car, Thier were 5 of us including my maniac driver friend, and pulling up to the carwash, he looks back and asks "got any towels?" Window go 👎 and he laughs maniacally as we all get soaked.

Here's a comprehensive guide on finding a city from a long-time Deep Darker!
- First, you're going to want to find mountains. Obviously, bigger is better, but there's quite a few biomes that classify as "mountains" in the game code that don't really feel mountainous. These would be groves, meadows, cherry groves to name the most common ones. I tend to have solid luck with groves more than the other sorta-mountain biomes, but that's just personal experience.
- Note that cities can reach into completely non-mountainous biomes like forests, birch forests etc but it's not worth the search as the probability of finding one down there is very, very low. Move on and find mountains.
- The mountains should be "continental", which is a game value determined by how far inland the area is. Generally, this means that a meadow right next to an ocean is a no-go. Just like cities can rarely stretch into a non-mountainous biome, you could possibly see one close to (or even under) an ocean if the ocean has a mountain biome nearby, however, not worth the time to check imo. The chances are quite low.
- A tip for this is that dripstone caves are also high continentality biomes, so if you see a mountainous biome with dripstone, you're almost always guaranteed a deep dark beneath.
- From my observation, deep darks tend to spawn roughly 100-150 blocks under the surface. This means that a "small mountain" biome like a grove or meadow in the 130-160s will have a deep dark usually starting around y=0 or the negatives, if there is one. This does also mean that tall mountains (y>200) can have deep darks in the 50s and very rarely over 100. The highest I saw was a huge jagged peaks that was splatted against the build limit (y=256), whose deep dark started at y=120.
- Once you're in the deep dark, check out the cave system if you're in one. Usually however I dig straight down using the 2-block method and get to y=-51. At y=-51 I start mining in straight lines hoping to find cities or caves. This particular altitude is good for a few reasons, which I'll list below:
Higher than lava pools, so you're not risking running into a wall of lava when mining.
Low altitude is good for diamonds, so while searching for cities you get the sweet sweet bonus of diamonds on the way.
The floor of the city is -51, so you won't accidentally dig over or under it (I believe the ceiling is around -35 but you don't want to mine there for a few reasons- it's more dangerous shrieker wise and also less diamond spawning, why would you want that)
Being low also comes with the advantage that caves below your altitude are likely filled with lava or very small. This reduces the chance of shriekers spawning below you, meaning that you have one less direction to worry about when you hear one go off.
- Make sure to have sounds or subtitles on. I prefer subtitles because they tell you which shrieker strike you're on (Warden approaches/advances/draws near/spawns on 4th). Lava pops will tell you if there's a cave nearby, which usually isn't a city- you can choose to investigate those or ignore, it's up to you. However there is one sound that's almost a guarantee of a city- "fire crackles". There's really nothing else at the bottom of a deep dark that'll generate fire other than the soul fire in city barracks or portal. If you hear fire, investigate it.

I've been doing this for way too long so I know just about every in and out of city finding and exploring. Let me know if you guys want me to add anything or go over other parts of the city exploration experience

9:14 there were 2 dispensers. 1 that spawned the zombie, the other that gave the player the sword. Didn't consider the zombie could pick the sword up😆

I use night vision potions. If you have the means to craft the enhanced version thats the way i would go. It literally lights up like its day time so you can see everything. It will still go dark if you spawn a warden but its very useful. You need a lot of them as they only last 8 mins

11:10 swift sneak is also very nice if you’re mining with the 1x1 method

I always turn on the villager trade rebalance experiment just so Mending appears in the Ancient City chests. It's less boring than re-breaking a lecturn for a half hour or more and gives me a reason to loot every Ancient City I find instead of marking them and leaving after getting all the other perks.

11:55 You don't need to jump to trigger shreikers or sensors.

I literally checked a few days ago to see if you had an ancient city guide before raiding my first one. Luckily I got the trims and swift sneak III within about 10 chests which was nice after seeing how long it took on the all trims nomad run.

Step one: night vision potions

Step two: hoe

Step three: run and start breaking shreikers.

5:17 nothing stings like using a trim before realizing you didn’t make enough copies (well a lot of things are worse but for the purposes of this comment)
