I'm seeing for cross product you are using a determinant with Method of Serrus. Ultimately it is up to what you are comfortable with but since they only need to deal with 3x3 matrices and we are not looking at variety of m by n matrices where m, n are counting numbers let alone square matrices which is neccessary condition to take an inverse - might I suggest having them to do FOIL or grid area multiplication with the different sign permutations of the cross product of the i, j, k unit vectors? I have an Oxford AA HL book and they do ask questions like interpret what vector you get for a random cross product string jxixkxixjxkxjxj etc. You also get more algebraic emphasis understanding cross product is simplest example of a Lie algebra in R^3.
