Kudos to the guy who walked into the eye of a hurricane holding one of these to confirm that the pressure was indeed low.

Brilliant, thanks for that my dad has had one of these on the wall for years, and always used it as he worked outside. I am the new custodian of our barometer and thanks to you I can now read it correctly cheers., Greetings from London

I LOVE Barometers, because as you say; no need to wind them, plug them in or use batteries - you hang them on the wall, and they’re there operating all of the time! It’s always good to tap them as you say; I’ve always done that as I pass it, and you can be quite astonished sometimes how much they can move which tells you quite clearly which way the weather is going! It’s important to note though for those new to them, to only tap them very lightly, as after all, these are precision instruments, and they won’t always respond which doesn’t mean they’re not working, as there may be nothing to respond to some of the time. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you, sir! As a student of Aircraft Maintenance Technician, I find this video immensely enriching. Reading the textbook without visuals or explanations can be rather "dry, " but your presentation enhances the learning experience significantly. Your ability to convey knowledge is truly commendable.
I wish you good health and peace, and I am once again grateful for your efforts, sir.

I've relied on my joints for a few decades to predict local weather and changes likely to influence it.
Severe inflammation indicates bad weather heading in, even in high summer, as it usually means thunderstorms present or building, during that season, but is more likely to flare during the expected bad weather of Winter.
Manageable pain without the need of heavy painkilling medication often accompanies dry, warm weather.
Arthritis...nature's way of taking you back to the classroom. 😂
I thoroughly enjoyed your scientific breakdown and thank you for uploading!

Thank you so much! I just inherited one from my dad - similar to what was on your wall - and this was very helpful.

Thank you so much for a wonderful insight into Barometers, how they work and how we can best interpret the readings. In particular the explanation of falling (low) and rising (high) pressure, and the reasons behind it was really informative and useful, I really enjoyed watching your video and am now top-fit in estimating what they are telling me. I guess recently I've become a bit of a Barometer fan and have already started collecting them, interesting ones. Latest item to the (still small) collection was a Sputnik Weather Station from the 60s/70s. Thanks again and keep them coming. I subscribe :-) - Bad-Cannstatt, Germany.

I found an Airguide barometer at a thrift yesterday and got it because it reminded me of my grandpa but also because I like what it does. Thank you for this video. I tapped it and the needle moved.

Thank you. I have my Grandpa's home barometer

My son has a 'sweet spot' - around 30.15 - where he goes into status epilepticus. Trying to understand barometric pressure has been the bane of my existence 😅 Thank you for more information (I can use) in 5 minutes than I've found in 15 years!

Thank you for a very good explanation of how barometers work. As i am growing more and more into the digital world, i get more and more interested in the analog tools from the past. Modern science and weatherforcasting is really phennomenal, but still - an oldfashioned barometer is far more fascinating. And the «unprecise» slowly gained knowledge every man used to have to predict the weather…i miss those days :)

Thank you. I inherited my barometer from my grandfather abd always wondered why he tapped it! Great video

Super helpful and to the point. Cheers

I just got a Fee and Stemwedel airstream barometer someone was giving away and I immediately took off the back to take a look and see how it worked and if everything was working properly. I knew nothing about the workings of these beforehand. I took to the internet to find out more and honed in on it being a 1940s model, and it’s an aneroid barometer (probably the Argyle but I can’t confirm that bit). It’s got the temp, humidity, and barometer gauges. I was confused about the small movable red hand and how to actually read and calibrate the thing. I did the tap test you mentioned, but felt like it could probably move a bit even if it wasn’t working properly, so I tried the bag test too; it worked!! Even though your videos are not the same model, the concept seems to be the same and I learned about the little red hand, why it’s movable, and why it goes on top or the larger hand (which I was initially confused about while reading about calibration online)! I just wanted to say, thank you so much for these videos! Your information has been so helpful and I now know how (and feel comfortable) to read and calibrate my barometer, as well as how it works, and where to put it, which (I learned through your videos) is anywhere visible since it reads the same whether inside or outside as temp and pressure don’t really change from inside to outside because no house is completely airtight!
These are really great and helpful videos! Thanks again! ❤

Thanks for the info. I just picked up a German banjo style and your video helped me set and understand it. Thanks again!!!

Proud new owner of a beautiful vintage weather station. I had to look up what a Hygrometer is and YouTubed how to use the Barometer with the manual knob. Thanks! I was just in Sandwich visiting relatives in July. Subscribed.

Thanks for the video I had one given to me now I know how it works Darren from Australia

My understanding is barometers predict mostly only severe weather. A normal amount of rain/snow will not necessarily cause a noticeable atmospheric pressure drop.
