Learn how to easily count comma or semi colon separated values in a single cell in Excel using a simple formula. As we are using a formula approach, we can count values or occurrence of text within a cell based on any delimiter including comma or semi colon.

In this tutorial we learn how to use Excel COUNTA and TEXTSPLIT functions to write the simplest formula to count the occurrence of text values in a string in a single cell. With this formula, we can easily count comma separated values in Excel. The same method can be used to count semi colon separated values.

And if we replace COUNTA function with SUM function, given the type of data, we can also SUM the comma separated values in Excel.

I did everything EXACTLY like in this video. I even tried copying the formula and everything else directly from the online file but every time I enter the formula I get an error message: "There's a problem with this formula". Why does this happen?

EDIT: Apparently it's because this function doesn't exist in Excel 2016, so I'll have to count everything by hand. 😓
