In this tutorial, let us about How-To-Count-Number-Of-Comma-Separated-Values-In-A-Cell-In-Excel

Lets consider this example where we have got some comma separated entries in each cell.

In the helper column, first let us count the number of commas and then add 1 to these results to get the desired answer.

In cell C5, I type the formula as =LEN(A5)-LEN(SUBSTITUTE(A5,",","")) and press enter and see the result as 3 as we have three commas.

Now in cell E5 you can add 1 to this result to get the no. of values in cell A5.
Drag this formula till the last row and you can observe the respective results like this.

Let us understand how this is working in this video.

Hi, thank you. Can we also count only after a Specific keywords, like white in your video? but also note that white is coming more than once in the same cell, I want to ignore all thats BEFORE FIRST white, and then count all after that, even if white comes multiple times after that.

it, s all ok. But there is a problem. I have a large data where some cells are blank and some are filled with various entries separated by commas. As i apply the prescribed formula, the empty/blank cells also shows the value of 1 despite they are blank. How to fix it

Thanks you for this tip!
Is there a way to use this same formula to add a total of the comma separated values of two different cells? Like in your example, say you wanted the total of A4 and A5 to be added and displayed in C6 (which would be the total of 7). Can you add a cell range to the formula, I guess is my question...
