Ooh … this is interesting…and … imo, I don’t think you could use that secondary approach to argue for his existence. Because I think that, they included it so they can stay closer to the events of the Bible? Otherwise, it wouldn’t be a plausible claim of theirs, that the hand of God was really supposed to go the lineage of Ismael instead of Isaac - which is still, to this day, the root of the war going on over there!

Robert Spencer has some interesting explanations for the embarrassing material, particularly the demonic verses. I'm not saying he's right, but his theory definitely seems to be plausible.

The Embarrassment Principle cuts both ways. Those stories might seem embarrassing to our modern sensibilities, but not necessarily so in cultures past. They could have easily been framed as hero narratives of overcoming Satan, temptation, adversity and the like. Think of the less than flattering situations the Greek heroes often found themselves in. The Greek writers often, but not always, presented their characters as real people, not fictional ones. I think we see the same thing with Mohammed.

Muhammed was every bit as real and as depicted as Abraham, Moses and Jesus... That is to say, there may have been a real person at the core of the stories but most of what made it into the history books/religious books is highly mythologized.
