Why is it that a Basenji is unable to bark?
Why are Basenjis unable to bark? Because their larynx is extremely flat in comparison to other breeds, these dogs are unable to bark properly. As a result, they are unable to produce the powerful sound blast associated with a typical bark.

Basenjis, unlike most dogs, do not bark. A yodel is the best way to describe the sound they make.

To really understand Basenjis they are quite intelligent, idependent, and very mischievous. If youu have a similar personality you are way ahead of the game. The fun is outsmarting them!

Aren't basenjis not supposed to bark

They can bark but not allowing them self to do so.

Let me tell you why. Its actually part of their untold history!

In the bible they gave us a hint. Exodus 11:7.

But back to their scientific history!

These dogs were all over the middle east once, in the land of canaan which is moderne lebanon and israel the basenji dwell aswell as in egypt / north africa.

But back then they did not understand dogs as they do today, they thought that a barking dog was disrespecting.

They hated when a dog barked, but needed it to growl in case of guarding sheep etc.

Plus the basenji needed to finde other ways to communicate.

So they developed traits which were given from generation to generation same way european dogs developed traits that were given down.

People were tough on them when they barked.

Thats why the basenji dont bark. They can, but they have inherited traits that dont allow them self to do so!

The basenji is one of or maybe are the dog that have suffered the most threw time.
