Just got a D700 from Wex for £580 with a shutter count of 22K... Almost as good as new and my lord my D750 has now become my back up camera, along with a 85mm 1.8 G this camera is a beast for portraiture.

Just bought a used D700 off of eBay a few weeks ago (upgrading from a D7100). I love it so much. It really is a great camera. It's got ~125, 000 clicks and it's seen better days, but I can't complain about much since I got it for $565.

LOL, why am I just now seeing this video. Answer: I'm getting my D700 today, first one. Hopefully I'll be as happy as you were in the beginning of the video. You had me laughing so hard, we all get that excited inside when we get new cameras.

That feeling when your eBay item arrives and it slowly dawns on you that you've been screwed.

Luckily eBay are pretty good at getting your money back. But you don't get compensated for all the messing around that a dishonest seller causes.

have you tried MPB as i got my D300s packaged in the original box like brand new and works fine, i use Ebay for small items but don't trust it for high value items.
I am looking for my first full frame and was thinking of a D700 as all my kit is Nikon and the mb10-d10

Dom I got myself a second hand D700 and Nikon Battery pack on eBay . The D700 was £390 and the battery pack a Nikon Battery pack for £40 .. awesome camera and a second body for my D800 . love this video

Old thread but for whatever its worth.
I believe you had two separate issues with this grip.

AA battery insert - this issue was actually well known but never advertised by Nikon and it affected both D300 and D700 which were released in 2007 and 2008 respectively. Issue was fixed in D300s released in 2009 but never corrected via firmware for D300 and D700 which probably means it was hardware related.
Affected cameras would stop recognizing MB-D10 grip with AA battery insert if voltage started dropping rapidly as with high FPS bursts or live view. Camera would then switch to default battery (in-body) and would not switch back to the grip unless grip itself was reconnected.

EN-EL3a battery insert - this insert is using a pinned port inside of the grip unlike the AA battery insert. One or more of the pins were probably bent which was preventing grip from going all the way in but when forced it would not show connected. This also explain why AA insert was working fine and showing connected (at least when it was).

3 years later, maybe the EN-EL battery holder was for a different battery grip, the connectors seemd to be like those on the D500 MB-D17. Note how the batteries are different EN-EL 15 and the one on the D700

Hey there, [sorry, long post]

Even though this video is more than a year old, I'd like to comment, since I have experienced very much the same and maybe this information can be helpful to others.

What most people seem not to be aware of is that the assumption of the MB-D10 being no more than a very large, glorified battery holder, albeit made - and well made - of fancy magnesium is plain wrong i.e. it is not a simple box with all contacts and connections just "passed through" to and handled by the D700/D300s.
In fact there is quite a complex PCB/circuit board inside the MB-D10, for the fact alone that it needs to handle 3 different kinds of power supplies/voltages (AAA, EN-El3, EN-El4 with adapter) and battery level measurements. AF-On, shutter button and the wheels really are mostly pass-through (done via the array of springy gold pins).

What usually happens when MB-D10 grips die (I have had this problem with 2 of my 3 MB-D10s) is that one/both of two ICs on the right-hand side of the board (don't nail me on what they really are, the part number is apparently proprietary) burn out. With mine the cause seems to have been moisture build-up during winter shootings, subsequently causing a short and burning out those chips - or plain death by old age of these (inferior) components (the two dead ones have serial numbers in close proximity to one another).

You can measure the output voltages on the connections (slots on top of grip) and for a dead grip usually there will be a voltage even if it is not connected to the camera and that SHOULD NOT BE (on a working grip there is a max of 0.6V i.e. data level voltages only).

Symptoms are among others: Camera won't even turn on when you have a charged battery in the grip AND a charged battery in the camera, but will turn on with battery in camera only. Will turn on, but turns off right away in the same configuration. Will semi-turn off and show blinky battery low symbol when grip with battery is attached. Will do nothing when turned on, but you hear a rapid click-click-click from the body (I love the sound of polyfuses in the morning). All of this might eventually damage your camera, as it has to deal with electricity being poured into it in the wrong manner (and who likes that). Also: do not mistake this for the similar problem of corroded contacts; if yours shows the symptoms above, in all likelihood no amount of de-ox squirted on it or other wonder stuff sprayed inside will bring back to life your grip's power system.

Still, if you are not in it for the additional FPS (5->8), but simply for the vertical/portrait orientation grip, just leave the batteries out of the grip and use the one in camera. Yes, that is annoying, yes it takes additional time to change batteries, especially with a handstrap, and yes, it should not happen.
For both of my broken grips, controls work just fine (powered by the camera), even though the power circuitry in the grip has been fried. So I use them on my D300s-es (which have 7fps without grip, plenty for me).

Again, sorry for the excess of words, but I feel that as of now (05/2017) still many see the D700 as an affordable way to stick their toe into FF water for a fair price.
And it ABSOLUTELY IS! It is a splendid camera (and you Dom have done quite of good job of getting that across, even though that specific deal turned sour).
The malfunction of a battery grip in conjunction with non-forthcoming/crooked sellers should in no way give people the impression all of the D700s are goners/crap by now. Mine is close to 9yrs old, with 113k on the clock and no worries whatsoever. And also: people, stop wasting time on pining over broken battery grips, trying to revive them. It's enough that fools like me have spent days dissecting them and fiddling on them without success.

bye

You need to have a battery in both the body and grip for it to work

Why did you sell your original D700? I have several beautiful and more modern cameras from Nikon, Fuji and Panasonic but still keep coming back to the D700.

Silly question but when you replace your shutter does the actuation number reset back to zero or it's just continues from the last known value?

I bought a used d700, from an independent camera store, NOT ebay! Perfect condition, 35k verified clicks. Still working great 2 yrs later.

You need to check the camera with a known working grip just in case the issue is with the camera itself which would be a more complex issue to resolve than the grip being faulty.

That's a shame you had to return the camera, the camera & power grip seemed fine when you was in the kitchen ?.

Are you going to be able to make due with the D700 for property photography? it seems like it will make things more difficult given the lower dynamic range, and fewer megapixels. When you get your full refund, see if you can go for a D750 or other newer model.

U can buy a nonbrand battery pack for like 20 bucks. Woulda been worth a shot. I mean the camera may have been fine.
