Why you should stop feeding these types of Koi food in your pond.

In todays video I will explain why It is so important to feed the best Koi Food for your Koi and Pond.

So before we start I need to make clear that not every hobbyist can pay for the best Koi food that is available. So in todays video I will explain what is important to look for if you buy a Koi food.

There are many parts of koi food that you have to take into account, if I have forgotten one let me know in the comments and let me know what brand of Koi food you are using at the moment.

Nowadays, there are many koi foods on the market that are derived from feeds for consumption fish. Feeds that aim to get the fish as large as possible for human consumption. A worrying development in which the health of the fish is not central.

I will discuss the most important points so that you can choose the best feed within your budget. Watch the video completely so you know exactly what to look out for!

First of all don’t let a fancy packages with the most beautiful and largest fish on them trick you to buy those.

So what does a Koi need? A koi does not have a stomach like most animals but only has intestines. In the intestines, the intake of all important nutrients that the koi extracts from the food takes place.

Basically, the Koi removes the so-called macronutrients from its food. This concerns proteins, fats and carbohydrates.

Let's start with the proteins. For most hobbyists, the first thing they look at when buying a koi food. Proteins are extremely important for the growth and health of the fish. We can divide the proteins into vegetable and natural proteins.

A good koi food contains natural, aquatic proteins such as high-quality fish meal. A cheaper Koi food often contains proteins from warm-blooded animals such as beef.

We as humans can take unlimited proteins while a Koi cannot, this is completely dependent on the water temperature and with a surplus of proteins the Koi will store this as fat around the organs. The solution? Seasonal food. Let's get back tot hat later this video.

The following part is very complex and can be studied in detail, I will try to explain the most important parts. We are talking about fats in koi food.

Basically there are three different functions of fats for a Koi. The first is energy. Fats are basically one of the first energy sources for the Koi. The second is growth. A koi needs fats to grow. And the third is the storage of energy. 3 very important parts that many hobbyists do not take into account when buying koi food.

The last of the 3 macronutrients is in my eyes the most important and underestimated of all 3. Carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are nothing more than starch and sugars. Together with the fats, the energy supplier for the Koi.

Just like in our food, too many carbohydrates are bad for you and a surplus will immediately be converted into fat. After all, they are sugars.

We can conclude that a surplus of proteins and carbohydrates is the direct cause of fat deposits around the organs of the koi. It is therefore very important to look at the quantities on the label when purchasing your koi food. A manufacturer is obliged to state this.

To make koi food you need a binder and these are carbohydrates. A good koi food uses ingredients that can be found close to the natural food of the carp. So, to give an example, they are not grains.

The following tips that I give you so that next time you buy a reliable and good koi food.

As I said earlier in previous videos, study the label well. Note the percentages. A koi food can only consist of a composition that is 100%. No less and certainly no more.

Do you see ingredients such as grain or soy on the label? Keep in mind that these ingredients have little nutritional value.

Do you want tips on how you can quickly grow Koi in your own pond?

I feed my goldfish (common and fancy) mainly with Tropical (a brand from Poland) and Hikari. Sometime I add Northfin and New life spectrum vegetable food. I love Tropical and Hikari because when you wish to see the full potential growth of your fish or the color, you have results with these two brand. Plus, the fish really adore the taste! Northfin is the only food who have the Montmorillonite clay in their pellets. So, it's an interesting addition for Koi and Goldfish growth.

Sorry, watched the video twice and honestly felt there was no tangible information to take away from it.
Extremely vague.

Hi I use Saki Hikari usually however for whatever reason as a stop gap I’ve bought Hikari Friend 6 mm pellets until my next delivery of Saki arrives . I use Katana as a get well remedy and occasionally Angel Koi food from my local dealer Angel koi which is very good and lots of fish meal in it .
How would you describe Hikari Friend ?
It’s much lighter than Saki in the hand ?

I appreciate the video but you still havent talked much about what you suggest the hobbyist to do. I was waiting to hear more on what you would recommend. High protein? Low protein? How much protein in terms of %? How much fat? Does it need Astaxanthin? Do you enrich low protein food with high protein spirulina??

Hi, I normally feed sakki hikari in the warmer months and hardly ever see any waste on the bottom, feeding hikari wheat germ I seem to get more fish waste on the bottom it does go but hangs around longer . Should I need to worry about water parameters going up because of this . Kind regards Paul

I switched over to Hikari after adopting some big Koi fish. My question is the ingredients on the bag are: Wheat flour, soybean meal, fish meal, rice bran, corn gluten meal, brewers dried yeast, spirulina, fish oil, garlic, dried seaweed meal, krill meal, mono calcium phosphate, choline chloride, vitamin E supplement, L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate (stabilized vitamin C), d-calcium pantothenate, riboflavin, vitamin A supplement, thiamine mononitrate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, niacin, folic acid, vitamin D3 supplement, biotin, salt, disodium phosphate, ferrous sulfate, magnesium sulfate, zinc sulfate, manganese sulfate, copper sulfate, calcium iodate, red 3, yellow 5 (artificial colors).

Didn't you say that grains and soy have little nutritional value and to watch out for that? I am curious what your thoughts are on this food?
