In this video I review the pros and cons to using Faber-Castell Polychromos colored pencils from a professional artists perspective. I’ve been using the polychromos colored pencils for over 2 years now, and have some great things to say about them and the benefits they have given my artwork.

These are really amazing colored pencils to work with, and allow you to get so much detail into your drawings!

If you are interested in buying them to try yourself, here's some links! (amazon affiliate links)

Your artwork is gorgeous. Polychromos is my favorite brand of artist grade colored pencils, and I do own all the major ones available worldwide. Thanks.

Such a lovely review! Completely agree with you on the pros. You con made me chuckle because I've never seen anything like this before, but I guess it might also have to do with climate and humidity in general.
Your drawings are breathtaking, btw! :D

I got the 120 set a couple of years ago. At first I was going to get the set of 36. But it would have been a waste to me because the 36 set does not have colors that I like to use, such as a true carnation pink.
Point; If you're after one of these expensive sets of pencils, make sure you will get the colors that you want to use. I mean if you buy a set of 48 pencils because you want to do mountains, and then get the set home and realize there is not even ONE gray in the entire box, you're going to be annoyed.
*coughs* Prisma

Polychromos were a little more affordable than luminance, so I JUST got those pencils for myself. I've wanted them for so long, and blick has sale so I got 120 set as a gift for myself, still haven't opened it. LOL I am nervous.

I was having buyer's regret about it, but your video made me feel better about my purchase. Really? you prefer Polychromos over Luminance? Polychromos were a little more affordable than luminance, so I JUST got that. But I've heard if you are going to sell your work, then go for luminace. But you're right, *looks on the back on the tin box* most of the pencils have 3 star lightfastness. I'll do the same thing you did and remove the 2 star and 1 stars.

FYI 17/120 were not 3 stars. But it's ok. I figured it would be best to learn with artist grade supplies instead of lower end and because they sell polychromos open stock so if I need another pencil I could just get that compared to other brands where I can't.

The two star lightfast rating still secures lightfastness of at least 50 years under museum conditions.

I have used these pencils for 3 years now dnd repurchased replacements a few times.

I absoluteley have never experienced that the coating of the pencil came off, losened or become grime. I use them all the time and even the shortest pencils still have and had a pristine barrel till totally used up. My coartists I know never had this problem either.
Could it be that you are wearing lotions before using your pencils?
I refrain from having anything on my hands for fear it ends up on the paper. Or maybe your pencils have collected dust on them that cakes on the pencils if you live in a humid environment? I really can't imagine any other reason as no one else I know has reported anything like that. The last possibility I can think of is that you accidentally got solvents on the barrel, that would partly dissolve the varnish.
Also it could just be regular grime from your hands snd oils collecting on it. I once took a bunch of children's pencils and gave them a quick wipe with dishwashing soap and lukewarm water. It cleaned those barrels of the school colored pencils perfectly, all the grime was gone but the varnish stayed put snd looked like new.

Hi, I love your work!
I have currently Prisma color pencils, but I have terrible trouble with breakage since right now I'm interested in drawing animals I want them to have a sharp point. I am quite new to colored pencils so I am wondering if I should purchase the Faber-Castel Polychromos, I am also quite nervous about how expensive they are. 😕
thanks :)
