A group of Republican lawmakers are pressing the Biden administration to completely cut off Huawei Technologies Co. and Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. from their American suppliers. The request comes after Huawei launched a new phone using highly advanced technology the US has been trying to keep out of China’s hands. Rebecca Choong Wilkins reports on Bloomberg Television.

Huawei is already banned in the US, while Apple has not yet been banned in China.

I can feel your anger, frustration and helplessness.
May God comfort you.

Huawei doesn't do business in the whole of US and the current 7nm
chipset is "solely made in china" so what else is there to sanction.

Sick mentality and dirty propaganda can never succeed in the world

Stop all the lies. The harder U. S. tries to contain China’s technology development, the faster China will develop them. 😅

America is very afraid and terrified by a cellular phone known as Hauwei. But I can tell you, more countries and more people around the world will using them@

For a country that's supposedly all about a free matket they sure do throw around a lot of restrictions and sanctions!🤣

The fact that Huawei dared releasing this phone probably means several things: 1. They developed and matured their own OS after US banned sales of Android to Huawei, 2. They developed and matured their own chip design software, or EDA, after US banned ETA sales to Huawei, 3. SMIC's chip manufacturing capability, although still behind TSMC and Samsung, two non-US chip makers, it is on par with Intel, or at least close to Intel. Making such a phone requires three things, chip design capability, OS, and someone who manufactures the chips. For the first two, there is little US can do as Huawei already developed those in house, and for the 3rd - SMIC makes the chips and the equipment they use come from Europe, Japan, US, and China. Looks like Chinese made equipment are replacing those made by US rapidly. SMIC now claims a third of their equipment are made domestically. The key equipment that SMIC is still lacking is lithography equipment, which is not made in the US. The only two suppliers are ASML in the Netherlands and Nikon in Japan. Thus if any additional sanctions to be made effectively, it is up to the Dutch and Japanese governments. Of course semiconductor materials are important, but that know-how is in Japan, and China has the rare earth metals bargain chip. A tough one. Not sure how many republican law makers realize it. One has to realize that Huawei and SMIC putting everything they have on this. Huawei's chief famously said "Winning semiconductor technology is not about shoring up dollars, it is about shoring up talent." It spends more than 25% of its revenue on R&D and the company employees 100, 500 R&D engineers, more than half of its total employees. This is something you can never do or Wallstreet will kill such a company in the west. The chief at SMIC, Dr. Liang, who in the past helped Samsung catching up TSMC in chip manufacturing technology, does not take a penny from his salary at SMIC, donating all to Semiconductor education scholarships in China. Things like this is what the lawmakers need to think about how to counter and compete so that we won't end up at the losing side a few years down the road.

There is only freedom until it affects your self interests. I can feel the desperation, 7nm today, 5nm in 3 years. If you had not sanctioned Huawei, they wouldn't create their own chips and they will continue to buy billions of chips with Taiwan, which uses DUV and EUV from the US and Netherlands, and it costs MONEY.

Competition was healthy until the US decided to sanction Huawei and now Huawei created their own chips with their DUV and EUV machines. Billions of chips that were planned to order are now cancelled. Americans fight to keep their economy while the government try their hardest to sink it.

Congratulations huawei for overcoming the the challenges that America had put on them but trying to control something and try to use an excuse for national security I can respect that they need for security but it's not fair to stop other people from advancing technology the world's phone shouldn't just be based on one three countries that they can control they should be not to be banned for another country to control

This isn't like sanctioning Cuba.

There are two kind of people in the world, those who can't create, and sees technology as assets to be traded or stolen, and those who can create, and sees technology as inevitable product of human ingenuity.

Americans, especially Republicans, belong to the first group, they have neither the education or imagination to create anything new, and are entirely reliant on Asian countries or Asians in California to "make things go". Trying to prevent others from obtaining these "assets" is naturally the only concept they can understand, because they're cognitively unable to understand the concept that technology can be created.
China on the other hand knows technology is the result of human capital, of education and talent, they haven't sanctioned Apple (yet) because they know they can create their own chips, they invested more than anyone else on talent and education and aren't afraid of competition.

It is precisely this difference between China and America, between the creators and takers, that made China world's oldest continuous civilization and far above America's league.

Reminds me of that scene from super troopers. “He's already pulled over! He can't pull over any farther!”

If you need to add sanctions on top of sanctions, clearly your sanctions aren’t working. I’m sure the Chinese will figure out a way to get around the next set of sanctions too.

Raimondo calling for China to have a "level playing" field and equitable regulatory environment while at the same time agitating for more sanctions against targeted Chinese companies deserves a slap in the face

This is so funny😂😂😂😂😂. They're having a meltdown. I don't want to scare them further but this phone has a localization rate of over 90%, There are some rumors indicating that smic actually didn't produce these chips, and finally DUV lithography machines from asml are set to be restricted by the end of the year which means that most of the restrictions have already been enacted including from japan.
