Biden Blasts 'Extreme' House Republicans as US Shutdown Nears
Показать описание
President Joe Biden blasted the "small group of extreme House Republicans" who he says is taking the nation once again to the brink of a federal government shutdown.
Speaking from the White House during a meeting with the Board of Advisors on Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Biden said a potential shutdown would be particularly devastating to Black and low income families who rely on nutrition assistance and other federal programs to make ends meet.
The nation is facing a Sept. 30 deadline for a shutdown unless Congress finds a way to agree on a spending plan for the new federal fiscal year that starts Sunday.
If a shutdown occurs, some federal workers could be furloughed, and some government services could be suspended until new spending authority is approved.
Biden said he and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy agreed months ago on spending levels for the government and he accused House Republicans of "reneging on the deal."
"Funding the government is one of the most basic fundamental responsibilities of Congress and Republicans in the House don't start doing their job, we should stop electing them," the president said.
