We've started the final stage of the Metro Tunnel

Wondering why you can’t hop on a train through the Metro Tunnel yet?

It’s because we still have a massive amount of work to do in the final stage of the project - what we call “Trial Operations”.

It’s when we bring in all of the people that’ll be running the stations on opening day and simulate hundreds of different scenarios - from checking the PA system, to how to evacuate in an emergency.

It’s a bit of a complicated process, so we’ll let you the experts run you through the rest.

About the Metro Tunnel Project

The Metro Tunnel will create a new end-to-end rail line from Sunbury in the west to Cranbourne/Pakenham in the south east, with bigger and more modern trains, and 5 new stations. With testing now underway, the Metro Tunnel will open in 2025.

Not looking forward to have to change trains considering my usually direct train is no longer going through the city loop. Are there really more people travelling from Sunbury to Pakenham than the city loop???

Actually, do you know what? All this tunnel system will be great, until some dumb trespasser brings the entire tunnel to a complete halt.

It's all so very fancy, so much nicer than the ugly duckling sky rail, what were they thinking? Make sure you plan for limited express bypassing Arden. I've been scratching my head wondering where all the passengers are going to come from. Maybe in a decade?

Thanks team. Can't wait till you rebuild Gardenvale station where the gaps in the platform are big enough to slide a pram through and the ramp to access the platform is steep enough for Musk to use for SpaceX launches. How someone in a wheelchair could ever get up it is hard to imagine. Less fancy lights and architectural features there could be invested in rebuilding those stations that are dangerous, in atrocious condition and should be barred from use by worksafe
