The movie was much better done, and was designed to reboot the X-Men Cinematic Universe. Hugh Jackman's Wolverine was the marquee character, so it made sense to make him the main player in the movie. From what I saw, the movie took inspiration from the comic and the version of the story from the 90's cartoon. It made the best of the existing X-Men movies, and opened up a great set of possibilities for future films.

Fun fact: Days of Future past was inspired and unintentionally by the Dr. Who episode "Day of the Daleks".

I thought franklin richards is an omega level character, its weird that he got killed off so easily. he has the power to change any outcome like he did in the onslaught series.

The one thing that they did miss was the fact that apparently the days of future past Future was not in fact the mainstream marvel earth 616 universe but was in fact Earth 811 so in the long run kittys mind was not in fact sent to the past but instead simply sent to the mainstream marvel earth 616 universe to prevent their possible Future from being just like theirs so in the end all the deaths and Heroic sacrifices happened were in vain.

That was a good sum up of the story. Over the years there have been offshoots to that world that are very interesting. The Age of Apocalypse sure was a ride.
