One way to link and automatically update Excel and Project data is to use the Paste Special command. This allows you to create a dynamic link between the two applications, so that any changes made in Excel are reflected in Project. Here are the steps to follow:

1. In Excel, select the range of cells that you want to link to Project.
2. Copy the cells by pressing Ctrl+C or clicking the Copy button on the Home tab.
3. Switch to Project and select the task or resource where you want to paste the data.
4. On the Task or Resource tab, click the arrow under Paste and choose Paste Special.
5. In the Paste Special dialog box, select Paste link and choose the format that matches your data, such as Text, Number, or Date.
6. Click OK to confirm the paste operation.
7. You should see a link icon next to the pasted data in Project, indicating that it is linked to Excel.
8. To update the data in Project, simply make changes in Excel and save the workbook. The changes will be automatically reflected in Project.
9. To edit or delete the link, right-click on the linked data in Project and choose Linked Worksheet Object Edit Link or Linked Worksheet Object Break Link. Link and automatically update Excel and Project data. Microsoft project tutorial.

Looks very interesting. I am trying to use this to link a budget file with all deliverables to a project file to define a schedule for each of the deliverables. The issue that I have is that the links that are created in project to specific cells in excel are fixed. This becomes a problem when I add rows in excel. At that moment, project is not linking to the correct row anymore

Great. So this could be used where the pm does not use or have ms project. Do you have to do the mapping before ?

Is it possible to have a live MS Project file that you do updates in, that can then be linked to an excel in such a way that the updates in MS Project populate into cells in excel instead of simply as an image? I ask because I have a number of percentage tables and graphs in Excel that I have to update data points manually and being able to connect the MS Project data as it updates directly (in a way that is grabbable in an excel that isn't just in image format) would eliminate hours of unnecessary work for me as I support multiple concurrent projects in this way. Specifically, is there a way to simply link single cells in excel to single cells in project so that as one updates in MS Project the other updates in Excel?

Can you also do this on Project Center level in Project online via excel? If you have 10 projects and want to update the Project Detail Pages, would this be possible? I know you can pull in data via Odata from PWA to excel.

So there is no way to make this bidirectional, where a person can update the MSProjcet OR the Excel and have it reflect in the other?
