Notes from the video to copy into your notes :)

GW elected in 1789

→ sets many precedents that put the principles of the Constitution in practice

     → two term presidency

     → established cabinet

     → Supreme Court set up

Alex Hamilton is sec. Of Treasury

→ will create division and political parties

Bill of Rights

-enumerated individual rights

-10 amendments to protect against govt

Hamilton’s Financial Plan

-Developed a financial program to pay off the debt and develop American manufacturing

-Assumption Plan: pay off natl debt and assume war debts of the states

-High tariffs on imports, as well as excise taxes (taxes on specific goods)

→ wanted to see a nation of manufacturers, raise revenue to pay off the debt

-controversial w/ non manufacturers

-created a NATL BANK: would create a stable, healthy economy

→ bunch of controversy (strict v. loose interpretation of the government)

-Hamilton argued that the necessary and proper clause allowed Congress to create the BUS since it was necessary to carry out its enumerated powers.

First Party System

Federalists:

manufacturing/Hamiltonian economic vision

Loose interpretation

strong central govt

Pro england

Jeffersonian Republicans:

Agrarian society

Strict interpretation

State rights

frontier

Whiskey Rebellion

-Excise tax on whiskey from Hamilton’s plan

- farmers in Penn refused to pay the tax

-GW brings 1000s of troops to shut it down

-Shows strength of the natl govt.

Foreign Policy: France

-Should the US help France?

-Feds wanted to avoid the war w/ England

-Too young of nation

-Dem Rep wanted to help out France to fight England

-Jefferson resigns from Secretary of State

-GW issued the Proclamation of Neutrality (challenged a lot)

Jay’s Treaty: British agreed to leave forts, but did not solve the NA problem or impressment

→ keeps US neutral

Pinckney’s Treaty: Spain agrees to allow the US usage of the Miss River and the port of New Orleans

→ made the northern boundary of florida on the 31st parallel

Washington’s Farewell Address:

Warns of permanent alliances

Political parties

Election of 1796:

-John Adams v. TJ

-Adams wins

-TJ becomes VP, but parties were opposite…

Foreign Policy Under J. Adams

-Seizing of American ships

-wants to avoid a war with France

-XYZ affair: wanted 250k to talk w French minister

-Strong demand for war among many Americans (military was too weak)

-Shows how nations didn’t respect our sovereignty

-Quasi War in the West Indies

Alien and Sedition Acts

Alien: president could deport/arrest immigrants

Sedition: made it illegal to criticize the govt.

Kentucky/Virginia resolutions: these laws passed were against the Constitution (state could nullify fed laws passed by Congress they felt were unconstitutional)

Compact theory: states had made a compact with the natl govt

Argument of nullification was used by SC/southerners when they wanted to secede from the Union in the 1830s/40s

Before I watched these series of videos, I was so stressed out by the chapter quizzes we had about the content of American Pageant (like I barely got half of the points of each quiz) And then someone in my class told me that your videos did a good job summarizing each chapter. Now I usually watch your video for each chapter about 3 times before the chapter quizzes to preview, to understand and to review the contents. I still read the textbook since it is more detailed, but the videos supplement what I have learned from the book. Recently, I got a pretty good score on my quiz, which inspires my confidence in getting a good grade in APUSH. Anyway, thanks to the videos! And I've telling my friends about them since I got the good score. (English 2nd language😂)
