If you know the power of index fund investing, you know two great indexes are the Total Stock Market (Total US Stock Market) and the S&P 500. To actually purchase the indexes, you can purchase mutual funds, low-cost index funds, or ETFs. In this video I compare the S&P 500 vs Total Stock Market performance, specifically with the Vanguard ETFs VOO vs VTI. I would argue the correct answer is JUST PICK ONE OR BOTH AND INVEST ASAP. They are both nearly identical in performance, fees, etc. It is better not to let the choice delay your investment and just pick one, or both, and invest rather than hold cash. This is supported with objective data - it is better to invest now than to wait in cash.

As they say, time in the market beats timing the market.

A well explained video but reading and mastering the charts is not an easy task for a beginner, if you can't handle it. I highly recommend you hire a qualified personnel who can decipher it and assist you.

Great video! I’m currently 90% VTI and 10% BND in my taxable account.

I am personally invested in VTI, been buying it for 15 years, but whenever people asked me, i always told them, It doesn't matter which fund you buy, VTI or VOO, it's really similar and it wont really impact your portfolio or life. so you could just close you eyes and pick either, and you'll be good for life with any one of them.

Great video man, I think I'm going with VTI as well since I'm early in my investing career. I like how they include the smaller companies which have the potential to grow over time. Buying 4 shares this week

I have a little bit of VTI, but I do hold VTSAX and VFIAX! Index funds were my entry way into investing and it's almost a no brainer for anyone who is interesting in getting started with investing. Like you mentioned, VOO and VTI both have their pros and they both deserve a spot in anyone's portfolio -- great video Sean :)

VTI makes more sense from a long term perspective, for reasons you mentioned. S&P is great and all because of stability, but, 15-20 years from now a small cap company could very well be one of the largest in the world. There was a time when Apple was a small company, now they are a Trillion dollar company. Any of the small cap companies in VTI could blow up like Apple, Alphabet or Amazon.

I just started investing. I plan on maxing mine and my wife's ROTH IRA out with VTSAX and all our other money is going into a brokerage account and buying VOO.

I'm dropping 30k into VOO before the end of the year.

Great video I was on the fence of which one to hold but I was always leaning towards VTI while the volatility might be greater the potential for outperforming is promising if you are buying and holding long term!

Nice video! 5:38 Where did you find this chart about trailing total returns VTI?

I love both ETFs, VOO, I believe is much more concentrated though than VTI. But you can buy more shares of VTI than VOO, so both are good to have.

I’ve heard for short term investing (I.E. to save for a house or car in a brokerage account) go with a 500 fund, but for long term investing in an IRA go with a total stock market fund.
