Replace a Broken Garage Door Spring

preview_player

There are two types of garage door springs. The doors with two springs are easy to replace. A pair of new springs cost about $25. A couple of carabiners can make the job a whole lot easier.

The carabiner/"screw link" (both terms are correct in this case and make it easier to order parts) idea is slick! Aircraft mechanic and experienced DIYer here. The rest of the video is best ignored and replaced by watching professional videos.

Please put a safety cable through the springs. If they fail it can be pretty violent.

Good video.

problems with this video include,

1. you should have a safety cable mounted to the angle iron used to hang the door from the ceiling, running through the spring and attached to the wall of track. this keeps the spring from flying off and killing someone. its also illegal to install new doors without them.

2. do not use the clamps shown in this video. adding extra length to the spring by using the clamps could allow the door to jam when the clamp gets stuck in the pulley. attach the spring to the hook that is bolted to the angle iron in the ceiling. remove the bolt from the cable pulley and place bracket over the other end of the spring, then put the bolt back in the pulley.

3. when the door is open, you need to set the spring with the right amount of tension. just placing the hook any where in the track is the worst idea ever. so, pull the cable until the spring removes most if not all of its sag, meaning it is tight, but not too tight. then attach the s hook into the track to hold the spring in that position.

4. always replace both springs on your door to ensure they are aplying the same amount of tension to the door on both sides, so that your door wont "walk" in the opening, causing it to jam, break your opener, damage your top section or completely destroy both.

and im sure there is a number 5 but im tried of typing lol so reply for questions

This person says that when a spring breaks it sounds like a shotgun -IT DOES and it could really injure you or your car if anything is close when spring break. PUT THE SAFETY CABLE IN. In fact, this guy should take this video down and INSTALL THE SAFETY CABLES for his and his family's safety. TODAY. Mine broke with the safety cable in and the spring did not fly all around. Get the SAFETY CABLES in NOW. Please - they are easy to install. I beg of you, do not risk injury.

Lack of safety knowledge about replacing extension springs then teaching others to do it wrong is going to get someone severely injured!

A nice Garage Door can complement as well as add a lot of curb appeal to a home too

Sorry bivelo and Jason S. Replacing the springs is that amazing simple. The whole point of the video is adding the "locking" carabiner to the mix. This vid is not about installing a garage door opener from scratch. One of the characteristics of a troll is that they don't pay attention to the video they watch before throwing a temper tantrum. YouTube in their infinite wisdom removed that annotate feature so I couldn't add text to the missing safety line. So, I repeat this in the comment section every once in a while. To Paul and the rest. Yes, safety lines are a great thing to have. My garage door did not have them when I bought the house. The door opener replacement kit didn't have them. The replacement springs don't come with them.

Safety Cable before someone is killed.

Using carabiners could be problematic as every carabiner has a strength rating, using an incorrect strength rated carabiner could cause serious injuries.

Do not just go by the color of the spring I mean it's China.. place a scale under the door to get a rough idea of the actual weight of the door go by the weight
