11 Bad Men's Style "Rules" to Ignore

01:35 1. Wear A Suit And Look Fantastic
While this piece of advice does advocate for dressing up which of course we support, it's a little bit too simplistic in nature. Fit is the most important factor when wearing any outfit.

02:16 2. More Clothes, The Better / If It’s On Sale, Buy It
Here's the thing about these two related pieces of advice. Ultimately, quantity does not equal quality.

03:30 3. Expensive = High Quality / Buy Only Name Brand Items
Just because something is very expensive or has a brand name associated with it doesn't necessarily mean that it's high quality.

04:22 4. Follow The Current Trends
It's never a bad thing to want to upgrade your personal style unless you're just doing it for superficial reasons or to fish for compliments. If you go out and buy a bunch of items of clothing that are trendy at the moment chances are that they're probably going to be out of fashion in a year or maybe even less time.

05:12 5. Outfits Should Match / Black And Brown Don’t Go Together
People often advocate for a monochromatic look because it's a relatively safe way of looking put together after all you won't have any wildly clashing colors if you're wearing all the same color. Similarly, people say that black and brown are two fundamentally different in terms of formality to be paired together. Both of these tips require a bit more nuance to be helpful.

06:53 6. Advice On Fit
The bottom line with any advice in terms of fit is this, properly fitted garments are ones that are proportional to your individual frame and thus that flatter you well.

08:08 7. Old Chestnuts About What Not To Wear
Like no wearing white after Labor Day, no wearing white before Memorial Day or no Brown in town. All of these supposed rules are entirely antiquated today.

09:19 8. Trousers With Belt Loops Needs A Belt
This tip comes from the fact that above all, most men's clothing really is rooted in purpose and utility. Belt loops are another similarly utilitarian feature.

10:44 9. Leather And Metals Must Match
This guideline is designed to help men who are just starting out with the principles of classic style to assemble outfits that are more harmonious. And while it's never going to look bad if you match the metals or the leathers in your outfit you can also be tasteful about bending this rule.

12:04 10. Always Match Your Socks To Your Pants Or Shoes
While these two fundamental rules are true and sound, that doesn't mean that you always have to feel like your socks should match your pants directly.

13:21 11. Follow The Advice Of Your Favourite Style Site
Obviously, we here at the Gentleman's Gazette think that we're providing the best advice possible to all men who are looking to upgrade their style. And while we do hope that you'll follow the guidelines we put out. Keep in mind that they are just that guidelines. If you want to experiment to some extent to find your own personal style and expression, go ahead and do so!

I don’t understand all the negative comments on Preston as a presenter. I think he does a great job, not just a great job for his age, but a great job. Period.

Preston, as an instructor with 25 years of experience, I give you an A+ on your presentation. The content was organized and clear, your diction, likewise. The length of the video was appropriate for the topic as well. Adding the links to other videos was helpful. Well done!

Preston is the man. Also, to everyone criticizing Preston, just watch some of Sven's older videos. He was much more awkward then and I would say Preston is adapting very quickly. It's hard being on camera!

To everyone pointing out Sven is better:
A: duh, Preston's "new" (been here for months actually) so give him a break,
B: be grateful GG is now able to put out professional video content more often,
C: do the Gentlemanly thing and provide constructive criticism if you actually want Preston to improve.

If you can't do any of these things you really don't belong here.

Don't teach me to dress, teach me to talk. This was a wonderful presentation. The style advice was informative, but, Preston, rarely have I heard the English language spoken so fluently. That alone, pushed me to step up my game. Thank you.

It is unclear to me why YouTube recommended these videos to me, a female, but I watch them with enjoyment even though I do not always agree with everything said. What I do NOT enjoy, however, is the rudeness of some of the individuals who make comments. Personal attacks are never appropriate and certainly are not gentlemanly. Constructive criticism is one thing, but I have seen some truly brutal personal comments posted after some of the videos and directed at both of the presenters. I do not understand why those posters are on a site intended for gentlemen. Certainly people should feel free to criticize, provided their criticism is intelligent, polite, and constructive; otherwise, they are just trolls.

I enjoy Preston Schlueter's delivery. The speed of his delivery is perfect, not too fast and not too slow, and so is his enunciation. Never do I have an issue understanding anything he says. If some people find his delivery a little stiff or unnatural, I am sure that will cease to be an issue with time; I have noticed improvement just in the few weeks that I have been watching the videos, although I never found him displeasing to begin with. In other words, cut him some slack; sometimes it takes a little while to get comfortable in front of a camera.

Don't worry Preston, while there are a few people who complain about you and want Rafael instead. All of the people who watched the video and didn't comment anything like you. Keep up the good work!

I want a channel called Lady's Gazette! Oh this would be so nice. I'm so geeking out right now with all the colour coordination and harmonies. It runs in my family the obsession of colour/style harmony.

You speak so well. Excellent accent so clear and pleasing to ears.

I'd rather use my Late Grandfather's suit, he was my build and was a sharp dresser. I still wear his wool overcoat from 1952, keeps me warmer than any down parka I could own and looks ten times better. Great video.

Amazed at the ignorance and rudeness at some of the comments; there are some who just seem to be permanently angry with someone or something else, and rather than deal with that honestly, they make personal remarks about a person they don't know at all. This young man is extremely tall, quite thin, and clearly has a degree of physical disability: that does not make it acceptable to mock him. And anyway, there's nothing to mock - he dresses well; his advice is good; his voice is clear and understandable, which is very useful for those of us with hearing problems - sheer volume is no use to me, for one. Even the worst of comments here aren't as bad as some things you'll find on YouTube - but that doesn't make rudeness, cruelty, and offensiveness any better.

To the one who said 'this guy creeps me out' - well if so, go and watch someone more to your taste. What creeps me out are people who can master a computer keyboard, but can't manage to stop themselves behaving like jerks.

Great video! I enjoy bending the rules slightly, when appropriate.
I personally enjoy Preston’s good use of English and his clear annunciation. Too many of us get sloppy with our speech. Kudos, Preston, for NOT! Your facial expressions and gestures soften and liven the presentation nicely. Keep up the good work.

There’s just something special about Preston that I like. I feel like he’s the announcer on my favorite radio show, or that teacher whose class I really enjoy.

All of the presenters of these videos are both knowledgeable and present themselves like polite gentleman. We need more of that in this world.

I’ve been a person who likes dressing in suits for over 30 years since I was 18 years old. I find myself agreeing with your videos and even learn new things. I show these video to my kid because videos on table manners was a great way to learn and the video has enough humor to keep my kid entertained as well. Keep up the good work and I look forward to watching more videos.

One of the things I like about this site (apart from the actual content): the self-irony and the willingness these chaps have to "pull their own leg". At: 13:20

Perhaps it's because I'm older (61) but trousers with belt loops and no belt look goofy; like the person didn't finish dressing. I see it fairly often so I suspect it's just me. :-)
