It's different harmonically, but I really like to use the bviim7 chord as a replacement for the tri-tone substitution in the ii-V-I - so instead of ii-bIImaj7-I, I like to use iim7-bviim7-I - or Dm7|Bbm7|C in C major. The bVII is a really versatile altered note within the scale. I also like to use the #IV as a replacement for theSecDominant V/V - so using F#maj7 as a substitute for Dmaj7 (or Dmaj9 as it were) in C major to lead to the V chord. I once wrote a piece using IV|#IV|V|iim7 - vi|| as the main progression.

I'm glad to have a better understanding of these "Pre-Dominant" chords and how they function and that they're made up from the minor ll. I never knew Michael Jackson had any association to the soundtrack or sonic what so ever, that's awesome and Knuckles was always my favorite sonic character. The only one thing I don't like about your videos is that they come to an end, haha.

Just noticed the outro music reminds me of the S3&K soundtrack, did you have that in mind when composing it or was it just coincidental?
