I live off the grid in Vermont. Solar power with a back up propane generator. It's awesome. I also have a natural well that provides all the water I could possibly need. It's the way of the future. I embraced it early on and wouldn't go back.
Edit: I do have internet and the needed luxuries of life but just no need to power and water.
The only thing that is very different is that there is no waist service. So I bring trash bags to a set location where garbage trucks charge very little per bag. I also eliminate most of my cardboard by burning it in a barrel fire.

I lived off the grid for ten years... I loved it. But then it's hard to go back to having a mobile phone again... so I barely use mine. I have it on mute ALL the time! U actually really get into reading & meditating! I still meditate heaps.
