Protect Family Caregivers

Millions of people in America take care of loved ones who need help caring for themselves. Anyone who has ever been a family caregiver knows that taking care of someone else takes time and money. Working caregivers have it particularly rough because they may have to cut back hours, switch to lower paying jobs, take leaves of absence, or sometimes stop work entirely to focus on providing care. For many, balancing a job and family caregiving responsibility is nearly impossible.

The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) is the only major federal public policy that guarantees unpaid leave for workers who need to take time off to care for themselves or their families. FMLA provides some protection, but there are gaps in the formulation of the Act such that fully 60 million workers are not even covered by it. The biggest obstacle to helping family caregivers is this: many working caregivers simply cannot afford to miss a paycheck, even if their workplaces allow them to take unpaid leave.

Imagine the difference it would make for caregivers in the United States if people could take time off for caregiving responsibilities without putting their own economic security at risk. It’s time to make workplace policies that match the realities of today’s workers and truly help families facing difficult choices.
