New BMW M5 Review: Why does everyone hate it?

The time has come for Mat to review the all-new BMW M5!

Now it’s fair to say that the new M5 has had a fair bit of criticism thrown its way since it was unveiled back in June, but is it all justified? Mat’s about to take a closer look and find out.

Starting with the design, there’s no denying that it has a pretty aggressive look to it. There’s a huge front bumper that comes with massive air intakes, while there’s also a large blacked-out M grille which can even illuminate at night! Along the side, there are side skirts and M side mirrors, while at the back there’s a crazy diffuser-styled bumper, coupled with quad tailpipes! It’s even possible to add a carbon fibre roof as well.

Step inside and you’ll find a traditional M interior, with a large swooping digital dial and infotainment screen. There are loads of M touches as well, including the M steering wheel, M sports seats, and even M pedals! There’s lots of soft-touch material throughout, and a lot of M functionality hidden in the infotainment system.

Under the bonnet, the new M5 is still powered by a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8. However, it’s now also a hybrid, so when the engine and electric motor combine it produces 727hp and 1,000Nm of torque! But of course, the hybrid system massively adds to the weight, with the M5 clocking in at 2,435kg!

All in, the new M5 costs from around £111,000. So is it worth it?! You’ll need to stick with Mat to see for yourself!

The reason I don't like the new m5, is that it is heavier than:

A 2024 Ford F-150 King Ranch
A literal Rhino
A Diamond DA42 AIRPLANE
2 Miatas
A Lamborghini Urus
The BMW X6M
A GMC Sierra
And last but not least, Literally an H3 Hummer

This is also before mentioning all of the performance, and quality downgrades.
TLDR; BMW is huffing too much Galaxy Gas

18:52 I noticed earlier when you pressed the buttons down in the Center how much the panel flexed. Older bmw interiors are solid that looked anything but.

I grew up with a dad who drove 5 series BMW's and various Audi cars. This influence sparked a passion for German cars that I have held til this day. Now 53 and I must say that, to me it seems like these manufacturers are all in a race to get somewhere that I have no interest in going.

Mat basically said: the new M5 is ugly, doesn’t handle that well(possibly the worst thing to say for a new M car), expensive, and rather cheap feeling inside. So no high points in the important areas for this class of car.

BMW really are out of their minds these days.

I drove an M5 E39 in imalored with red/black interior... It was stunning and back then gave me everything I wanted. It was for sure the best looking and the best driving M5 ever... Real M5, not electric and all... BMW went downhill after that... I would not buy a BMW anymore today after I drove soooo many in the past...

1. It's heavy af
2. It's hybrid
3. It looks like a car from GTA that tries to imitate a BMW

Yes its fast, yes its powerful, yes it would smoke most production 4 door sedans. But speed and power isn't everything. The Tesla Plaid would smoke just about any other production ICE car, but a lot of car enthusiasts would prefer an ICE car regardless of how much slower it is

10:47 - BMW said the grills were ostentatiously large because extra cooling was needed. Also, they blocked off nearly 60% of it on the vehicle that would need the most cooling.

The M5 Competition F90 achieved a 0-60 mph time of 2.9 seconds and a 1/4-mile time of 10.9 seconds. In comparison, the new M5 G90 clocks in at 3.5 seconds for 0-60 mph and 11.3 seconds for the 1/4-mile. This performance gap is the primary reason many people are disappointed with the new M5 G90.

600kg hybrid system, with all those driving mode settings... it's like having the agility capability of a jetski, but fitted on a cruise ship. Makes no sense being there. That hybrid system would be perfect for the 7 series. The M5 should always remain under 2000kg.

The "old" ICE-only M5 CS went 0-60 in 2.9secs, and 1/4 mile in 10.9secs.
All, while weighing 1000+lbs (400+kg) less. Talk about driving dynamics, with an additional 1000lbs.
This vehicle, compared to the old one - is definitely a step down.

No soft-close doors? No massaging seats? No more B&W Diamond surround sound system? No Night Vision? No Laser Headlights? No extended interior stitching? Less physical buttons? Way to go with the cost-savings BMW...

the worst part is the way their design style is going downhill.. what the hell is this, specially inside it looks like the car is empty and only has a screen and a steering wheel. I doubt the masses actualy prefer this to a more "conventional car"

As far as M styling, the E 39 M5 is the absolute winner. BMW has lost its way with the origami folds that truly take away from what it really could be. Less is more when it comes to the styling of a car that you're going to drive every day.
