thats valve seals they are most likely rotten i own a xr600 great bike still runs the valve seals were stock i took them out and they were cracked and hard but it does sound like the motor needs new shims or whatever clearance it needs but it sounds very simple and likely a 50$ for new seals but if the seals look fine its most likely the ring or head gasket the gasket would be a rarity but rings and seals are very common just get the tools and do it at home

Probably needs new valve seals and a new top end. My bike was smoking and this was the culprit.
