The difference between oceans, seas and billabongs | Did You Know?

We all know Australia is “girt by sea” … but if you want to be precise, it’s actually more girt by oceans.

The planet is about 70% water — and Australians should know that better than most. But there are some interesting rules for how bodies of water are named. What makes an ocean, and what defines a sea? What's the different between a gulf and a bay? There are widely agreed upon naming conventions, but there are also plenty of interesting exceptions around the world.

What about "sound"?
In geography, a sound is a large sea or ocean inlet larger than a bay, deeper than a bight, and wider than a fjord; or a narrow sea or ocean channel between two bodies of land (see also strait). An example: the Cockburn Sound is an inlet of the Indian Ocean on the coast of Western Australia.

I was looking for the differences between ocean and sea, now I hate water in general, so many things and so little time to remember. Brilliant video anyways

One small correction, the earth isn't 70% water. The earths surface is covered 70% by water. But, water is only 0.02% of the earths total mass, most of it is rock.

So this is basically another “what are continents?” situation where we don’t know entirely know what these geographical features are and just ignore what we made. And it’s an awful way to divide a section of land or water so we can more easily understand it

Australia is not bordered by the Southern Ocean even tho', for some unknown reason Australians are told that it is. Officially the Southern Ocean begins around 66 degrees south while Australia only reaches about 47 degrees south. The Ocean which lies south of W.A, S.A. and to the eastern most point of Victoria is the Indian Ocean.
