In the opening round of the 2024 ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP, Xander Schauffele attempts to escape a tree root twice before taking an unplayable ball, leading to a quadruple-bogey 8 on the par-4 9th hole.

The FedExCup Fall rolls on as the PGA TOUR heads to Japan for the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP at the Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club. The tournament is unique among Fall events as the only competition without a cut. Collin Morikawa returns this week to defend his title and aims to become the first ever player to go back-to-back at this event. Morikawa has made eight top-10s including T2 finishes at the Memorial in June and the TOUR Championship last month. The American has managed two top-10 results in four appearances at ZOZO. Xander Schauffele will also like his chances this week as he followed major championship victories at the PGA Championship and at The Open with four straight top-10 finishes, including a T4 at the TOUR Championship in his last start. He’s also finished inside the top-25 in 20 of the 21 events he’s played this year. Native Hideki Matsuyama will also be teeing it up in Chiba this week. The Japanese veteran was victorious here in 2021 and finished runner up to Tiger Woods in the inaugural tournament in 2019. He has also claimed two victories on TOUR this year at The Genesis Invitational in February and FedEx St. Jude Championship in August. Others to look out for are Sahith Theegala, Max Homa, Justin Thomas and Min Woo Lee.

I don't understand. Can't he just underarm toss it back onto the edge of the fairway, take a swig of his tallboy, and "forget" to add the extra stroke at the end of the hole?

I am so supprised that experienced player like Schauffle could make such decision NOT to take unplayable, feel really sorry for him.

To be fair, he did admit afterwards that he made a mistake and called himself an idiot. He got caught up in the moment

golf noob here, what does the number beside the player's +/- mean on the leaderboard? e.g. the 8 for Schauffele, 14 for Greyserman, etc

Why wouldn't he just pull out his tree-wood???

At Willie's Perdernales golf club in Spicewood the fastest cart always has a good lie and often wins the hole.

Sometimes you go for that impossible shot and it comes off, this time it didn't, welcome to golf.

Thats what I like watching just as much as throwing away the club. Much better than boring putting.
