Found this after running Gnomengarde. This makes a lot more sense. Going to the dining room and then the gnome firing at the party when they had no reason to know kinda had them scratching their heads.

these videos have been a total lifesaver for me. I've played a handful of one offs but not much else. I work for a Day Drop-In Youth Homeless Facility and was talking to a youth that came in that got really excited about DND and convinced me and my boss to start a DnD group. She bought this starter kit and I had absolutely NO IDEA what I was getting into, it was seriously overwhelming. I ended up buying the kit for myself so I could test run it with my girlfriend. I'm rewriting entire sections and adding extra notes based off your suggestions and It's going great so far between me and her! I seriously don't know what I would do without these. I'm super excited to try it out with a group. Thank you so much!

An idea I had for the mimic to tie in with the characters was to have it be a pet of the orcs from Dwarven Excavation, wandering in Gnomengarde looking for food, rabid from the wild magic. When it gets to around 10-5 HP, the wild magic will wear off and a player will have the opportunity to make it their pet, which can transform into one weapon of their choice for every 3rd level they get. The damage from the PCs will make its HP and AC as a pet considerably lower to fit the party level.

this is great brought down to this level. when I got to run through this, there were more rooms we had to go through and a room that looped us if we went too far. We met a crazy lady gnome trying to invent a turning spear thrower, I find it interesting that your player automatically knew it was in the wine room not in the treasure room, flibblestop and his friend told us that the kinds were crazy and that's why they need the straight jacket and the ray. So many missed opportunities for puzzles and adventure
