Kids generally listen to their parents, it has nothing to do with disrespect or thinking that the old folks are stupid. But as we grow up, doing things differently than our parents did is normal, especially with science and technology advancing at increasing rates.

Ultimately, it's because of sin. It is a temptation that one faces when they desire to do things their own way, something we are all tempted with. We all have free will to choose whether we will do right, or if we do wrong. Sin is the result of turning away from God and doing wrong. Following God honestly brings the most amazing feeling that one can feel, and it never truly goes away. Without God in our lives, we experience a temporary happiness within our minds that we always have to try and refill, because it never lasts. We always are chasing after things to make us happy, but it always fades away. However, once we have God in our lives and accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we feel this deep sense of joy in our hearts, and nothing can ever take it away. That does not mean that life is perfect, but we can always know that we have a God who loves us and will never fail us. As long as we are still alive and breathing, it is never too late to choose Him. Living in sin never has positive results and ultimately will end in eternal destruction. Having salvation in Jesus Christ is the only way to be free from that.
