I wanted to share my experience. Im 62 and filed when i was 60. 43 year solid work history. Crushing injury from a tree falling . Full body cast. Traction. Rehab. Three surgeries. I filed 18 months ago and have still heard nothing at initial application. When i call im told they are updating my medical records. I laugh as i look at the 37 staples in my abdomen from most recent surgery. I've contacted my senators and an attorney. Im so defeated at this first stage taking so long when my injuries are so severe.

I used to work with mental health clients. Many were severely mentally ill. The initial rejection rate was over 90%. Almost all these people had to go with attorneys for appeals, and most eventually got disability after one to two years. Clearly there is a problem with evaluating these persons appropriately at the agency. Obviously people with severe physical disabilities get quicker results. It is quite unfortunate that those with the most need and the least ability to help themselves get rejected the most.
And, yes I do understand the issues of potential to game the system, but making the severely mentally handicapped pay private attorneys a huge portion of their award to get the award is cruel and counterproductive.

My wife had a brain tumor. She got denied she reapplied they made her go see a psychologist still got denied she had to go back to work. My son was five years old. She could’ve spent at least maybe six months to a year or more with her child, and then she died.

Thank you. My son is 30 and will be applying. He's never been able to work because of his autism. He doesn't have mental capacity to work. We've tried for over ten years. We have always supported him, but we have a life change. Husband is on ss, and I am being layer off. I'm 62 and will stop working. My son needs help and has no income. He will need medicaid.

I don't think it happens to everyone but it is something that happens to a lot of applicants.

There are many elderly poor sick peopel who qualify but are still denied. There are unemployed people who live on the streets with mental illness and they too are denied!

Okay so what happened when they deny you and they send you the letters telling you why you're denied and the information they tell you why you're denied disability and the information they tell you is inaccurate information and they just made something up and why you was denied and there's proof that you can show them that they're wrong I got denied for something that they made up it isn't true and you have proof that is not true and they made something up to deny you then what somebody should be held accountable foray for lying on documents put inaccurate information lies on it

I have ulcerative colitis since 2004 and the flares are terrible and last for weeks. Bloody diarrhea running to the bathroom several times a day. I have to do colonoscopy every two years to prevent cancer. Am I entitle to disability?

Why dont they just get rid of this dumb program that everyone needs, and just start giving out monthly stripends for the poor and unemployed people who are desperate in America?

It depends what the disability is. If you have something you will likely die from- you are likely approved. It also seems the closer to 55-60- you are, that is always a factor. You are right- algorithms may be true. I think Lawyers many times just use the denial hype to make more money. Husband approved immediately with end stage kidney disease.
