Hello Neighbor is a survival horror stealth game developed by Russian video game studio Dynamic Pixels and published by TinyBuild. The goal of the game is to successfully sneak into the basement of the neighbor's house to uncover a secret. The game's artificial intelligence (AI) modifies the neighbor's behavior based on the player's past actions, such as setting traps along paths the player followed in a previous attempt. A sequel, Hello Neighbor 2, is scheduled for release in 2021.

Moral of the story: don't prioritize going viral and lore over gameplay

I'm always going to remember tinybuild getting desperate for a game theory

Edit: who's coming back now Matpat actually did the game theory

Whats even worse about the ending:
It was fanmade! No one talks about this but towards the final beta fans were able to submit endings to the website and people could vote on it.

They really should have kept it small like their original vision. It seriously stuck closer to a horror element, from the music that played when the Neighbor saw you to the small environment you had to avoid him in. All the ridiculous gimics and huge environments really killed it all.

Hello Neighbor had a good concept. And a shit ton of potential. I was actually a fan of it back in 2017 because at the time it wasn’t as bad as it is today. I basically forgot about it eventually and I didn’t know it later flopped. It’s really sad how they messed up the entire game which resulted in bad ai, a shit ton of bugs, an absolutely atrocious story and ending, terrible physics, terrible gameplay etc. Not to mention, HOW IN THE FUCK DO YOU STEP ON A TRASH CAN LID AND FLY INTO OUTER SPACE

JackSepticEye’s reaction to the final game was great. He hated it lol

they could have made the game better by: fixing the bugs, making a list that tell's you what you need to do and what do you need to find, making it less hard, making a house for every level that will explain the story of the Neighbor so it would be more fun, man this game have so much potential

Edit: dame 4000 likes?!
Thanks guys as a man who work on an indie horror game this realy give me hope that my ideas for a video game are good

I’m forever gonna miss the old demonic lore this game once had

The hello neighbour Twitter constantly tweeting at matpat is one of the cringiest things I have ever seen.

They realised a lot of their game required matpat to make theories on it to survive, because it couldn’t survive on its own.

What confuses me is how they managed to make the graphics worse with each release instead of the other way around

The developers of Hello Neighbor really focused too much into making it into a 'Youtube playthrough' game. You can have fun watching someone else struggle through the puzzles, but to try and play it yourself feels like a chore.

In addition this game is the shining example of a game focused on child-friendly youtuber hype-driven marketing gone wrong. A pitiful display of what happens when someone lacks the game design knowledge to make it work, yet still is determined to build a product based on taking the seemingly massive audience of young teenagers addicted to the intrigue and mystery of games like FNaF, Doki Doki, and even FNF. And a worse example of what happens when someone takes it way too far, and out of desperation for clout, neglects what the end product should have always been, leaving it a walking corpse that defies its own existence.

A game that doesn't understand what it needs to be, or what its strengths were, other than "mysterious like Five Nights at Freddy's". This game is the Yandere Simulator of horror games. It took way longer than it had any right to, doesn't understand its strengths or weaknesses, and very intentionally rides on the hype of a constantly moving, constantly shifting subgenre of media while trying to drag it out as long as possible.

The talk about physics reminds me of the video where CaptainSauce spent 2 hours trying to stack boxes to get on the train in Alpha 1.
He made such a good theory video after Alpha 2, which was supported by all the version until the final release when the game removed certain things (like the picture of the protagonist and the neighbor) as if just to say that nobody predicted the story.

To summarize it in a sentence, the game initially had a lot of promise until the developers lost sight of why players were so interested in the game, and each subsequent update pushed the game further away from that promising start.

Hello Neighbor's central problem was they got too greedy and started lore chasing.

They wanted a BIG and MYSTERIOUS game to inspire lore and that became their main focus instead of refining the game's core concept of an AI that learned and adapted to you.

Those who hoped for that big overhaul fix, just go play the mod "Home Alone, Neighbour?"
It fixes a fuck ton of stuff and is based off the original alphas story, not the final one. Fixes a lot of bugs too
The original itself was fascinating and this mod leans in on that. The confusion and all that is lifted. Sure it's not simple but it's definitely more functional. Story is slightly different too with Nick not being captured as a kid like in the official story, but it takes the mystery of the first few alphas and makes a fascinating story out of it!

the hate videos contributed to the downfall, but they wouldn't have even been created if the developers had fixed the game.

basically the downfall was because the devs didnt fix the problems they needed to, the videos on the game where just informing people of how bad the problems were.

Those screenshots of the devs almost begging MatPat to do a video are very curious. It reflects about how many indie games are made today: make a quirky that seems very cutesy but once you look deepers, it's about dark themes like depression or sexual abuse or some shit like that, but they don't explain too much because they're hoping fans and theory youtubers do videos that write their story for them. They can then go one of two things: 1. Try to subvert expectations and change to the complete opposite things that fans are theorizing; 2. Make their theory a reality. Many can't write a story that's theirs because they constantly keep updating the games. It gets to the point where devs don't know what the fuck they're doing and neither do the theory youtubers because when they go research about it and ask anonimously ofr theories, people answer "Don't worry - X youtuber is gonna do a theory about it." MatPat and Wendigoon already complained about these kind of stuff. Devs need to be more authentic in their story.

I feel so bad for this game. I loved this game when I was younger, but know I see the flaws in this mess. I really want to see this game have a good entry with only some minor flaws, but that’s probably not going to come anytime soon. Hello neighbor 2 does look better, except for the AI…

In an alternate universe, the versions for this game are released in opposite order and everybody says "wow, each version gets better and better!"

I honestly miss the early Alpha and Beta versions when it was just one or two layers of the house, and that the Neighbor was more interesting and odd and would bug out all the time. It was strangely charming.
