In one of its very few articles on this topic, the ABC reported "Proposed seismic testing in the Bass Strait could emit blasts almost two times louder than a rock concert" (by Jack D. Evans) thereby demonstrating staggering mathematical ignorance. 250dB is not "twice as loud" as 125dB. The decibel scale is logarithmic, not linear. Sound energy doubles every 3dB, so actually, 128 dB is "twice as loud" as 125dB. A 10dB increase is TEN TIMES as loud, and a 20dB increase is 100 TIMES as loud, and so on. A jet engine taking off is about 120dB. At 250dB, these blasts are 130dB louder than that. That is 10, 000, 000, 000, 000 times louder. Yes, that's right: 250dB is ten thousand billion times louder than a jet airplane taking off. To put it in context, the explosion of Krakatoa on 27th August 1883 (the loudest sound in modern history) is estimated to have been around 310dB. The loudest accurately measured noise was the Saturn V rocket taking off at 204 dB.
250dB is a mind-bogglingly loud sound which would instantly kill anything nearby.
