Does that mean guns have a downside of needing bullets?

The reason you had that impression is because the chain gun is still the best when fighting the dungeon guardian NORMALLY, without a teleportation machine. When you're just flying around, it is exceptionally hard to land every single hit with weapons like the razorpine and laser machine gun, as they fire wide bursts of non-homing projectiles. Also, each projectile from zenith can actually hit enemies a second time as it is flying back, doubling its dps when fighting enemies very close up. When just flying away from the dungeon guardian to fight it, the chain gun is likely still the best option, or about tied with the zenith.
Also, since it is a ranged weapon, the chain gun can be paired with full frost armor to inflict frostburn, the only damaging debuff the dungeon guardian isn't immune to.

I didn’t know you could do this so I just flew around in the black spot and slowly killed him with zenith

Frostburn is best. If you get your hands on a weapon or buff that inflicts it will singnifically boost the time. Also, since the boomerang goes to the player, that'd be the tru afk option, not semiafk like this farm. Go watch skeleton guardian first night

You could lure the dungeon guardian to the end of the world so your mouse cursor wont move and you could hit him from both sides

There are quite a few weapons and effects from arrows/bullets that ignore all defense. I think frost burn arrows can do 32 damage to it.

I think you should use cyristal bullets especially with chain gun and sdmg
