Pros vs cons of hammock camping ⤵️

I have the Heven tent with the ultralight rainfly. Opinions are my own. Not spon.

PROS
• Lays flat and comes with an extra wide insulated sleeping pad (4 R value)
• Great for side sleepers and I assume anyone with knee or back pain who can’t crawl into a tent
• It's relatively affordable for a sleep system at $315 USD (tent+pad)
• Rain tarp is highly adjustable and can close from inside the hammock if the weather takes a turn
• If there's no trees around you can pitch it on the ground as a Bivy using trekking poles or sticks

CONSiderations
• Can't fit large dogs (sorry Kyro)
• It is 6 lbs 8oz (which is a pound or 2 heavier than my backpacking sleep system setup
• You can keep your bag inside but it was more comfortable outside under the tarp
•Works best with included mattress, the Nemo insulated tensor sleeping pad I have didn’t work because the sides caved in
• Make sure your head side is hung higher than the feet side and your butt is in the middle so your not slanted downwards

315 dollars is NOT relatively affordable.

As someone who has done his fair share of winter camping, I wouldn't be too enthusiastic to use this system in the cold climate in which I live. All it offers is mesh walls with a rain fly that simply drapes over the tent. This allows wind and snow to blow freely into the sleeping area. I also have found it difficult at times to find trees at adequate distance to support a hammock tent, and if you pitch this tent on the ground it will be like using a light weight summer kit. Being on the ground will also require a much better sleeping pad with higher R value. l'll stick with a conventional winter tent that offers superior protection against wind and precipitation, doesn't need trees, and my tested sleep system that protects against sub-zero temps.

I agree. The dog has to be accommodated especially in the winter!

Not fitting the dog is a deal breaker! You gonna leave your dog out by himself?!? No way.

Just a heads up winter camping in hammocks is miserable. It’s so hard to stay warm with all that cool air completely surrounding you, would not recommend

As a side sleeper the trick to sleeping in a hammock and laying flat is to lay at about a 30 degree angle across the hammock rather than straight through the middle. Your sleeping pad will also help keep you flat and then you don’t need an under quilt. Much lighter, much cheaper and easier to set up. I have a “la siesta” hammock made from parachute material and it’s super lightweight and very affordable. You can also add a ridge line to your hammock to make sure it is never too saggy or too tight.

Good luck with the winter camping!! My suggestions as someone who only hammock camps is to wear lots of layers, bring a cold weather sleeping bag AND an extra blanket, and to put down two mats on the bottom of the hammock so the cold air doesn’t get in through the bottom. Mummy bags are really good sleeping bags for that.

Spent many summers sleeping in a military style jungle hammock near a lake. This one looks like a dream by comparison.

A stormy night in this would be incredible

For everyone complaining about $315, for anyone who spends a serious amount of time outside and on long hikes, this is reasonable. You're literally carrying a light and portable sleeping environment.
Besides that, think how much you spend on beer and tobacco or whatever else you're guilty pleasures are. That hammock will last years.

So where does your beloved dog sleep? Does he get his own tent? The hammock tent seems nice, but I’d rather have my big pupper sleeping in there with me…otherwise I’d forego the hammock set-up.

I use a regular hanging one and it still makes my back feel better

Can’t fit my dog? Forget it! That’s a deal breaker!

That's more expensive than a lot of tents!

And my mind just went to the Avatar movie. The way they all sleep up in the trees in those little cocoon hammocks.

Id be surprised if that's viable for winter camping, but maybe. Getting off the ground is what's important, right?

I'm really interested in learning more about hammock camping. Here in the desert we're a bit challenged when it comes to trees.
