Thailand was once an absolute monarchy. But now it is a constitutional monarchy, in which the king is the head of state but generally does not rule. The King of Thailand's titles include Head of State, Head of the Armed Forces, Adherent of Buddhism and Upholder of Religions.

With the way Thailand keeps changing it's government, I'm kind of suprised no one tried to give the king MORE power.
