In this video, we’re going to talk about leptin.

What is leptin? Leptin is a hormone produced by fat cells. It sends signals through the blood to tell the body that you’re full. Leptin is a satiety hormone. It lets your brain know that it’s time to stop eating.

If you have a hard time feeling full or satisfied, it could be that your leptin levels are too low.

Since your fat cells make leptin, the more body fat that you have, the higher levels of leptin you should have.

In theory, the fatter you are, the more satisfied you should be. But this is not the case. When you have an excessive amount of leptin, your leptin receptors begin to develop a resistance to leptin. This is very similar to insulin resistance.

Those who are obese have a lot of leptin, but it is unavailable to their body. In turn, this brings a lot of hunger all day long.

The only way to restore leptin sensitivity is to lose weight, so you maintain healthy leptin levels.

Consuming plenty of healthy fats can actually help you burn fat and promote fullness. The healthy keto diet and intermittent fasting are the best ways to lose weight and support a healthy body. Give them a try and let me know how they work for you.

Surprisingly well explained, I'm a medical student interested in endocrinology and you managed to explain the concept of leptin in a very simple way. I personally would have also explained ghrelin as they work together and recommend anyone interested to look this hormone up, most people who are obese have either their leptin receptor damaged or their ghrelin levels altered.

This was the first video I've seen from you and I'm from germany without great english skills. But the way you've explained this topic was so well done that I really could easily follow you the whole video through. Thank you! :)

I must say your videos are great. There are two things that make them great. First and foremost the information. You break things down in a way that it is easy to understand. Second, they get to the point. There are other videos out there that provide great information but the person delivering the message takes 15 minutes to provide the same information that you do in five.

I love your videos and share them often. Thanks for all you do, you have helped me a lot.

Thanks to Dr Berg I have gone from clean eating to healthy Keto with amazing health results, losing weight and not getting those food cravings after dinner anymore. I cut out rice, white potato and ALL processed carbs replacing instead with a variety of Omega 3 fat rich proteins like fish, red meat, chicken, pork, eggs, veg and salads. Intermittent fasting for me now consists of skipping breakfast and fasting 16-18 hours from after dinner to next day lunch. I couldn't believe how easy it was because eating more natural healthy foods and olive oil stopped my cravings completely. Electrolytes were/are also important to keep me energized and I do drink a couple of black teas and coffee each day but have cut out snacking which is important. Sometimes adding cream is ok if i feel like it as it doesn't break a fast.
Our society has been misled for decades about the low fat diet...it's been replaced it with sugary carbs!

Exposure to water damaged buildings (mycotoxins, mold, CIRS) creates major issues with leptin leading to leptin resistance. This is a huge topic that gets swept under the rug, but 80% of buildings have water damage and is not properly addressed. 25% of the population have a defect in a particular hla gene that makes them more susceptible to chronic inflammatory issues and damage when exposed to mold/mycotoxins. If someone has chronic health issues that aren't resolving, it could be due to mold exposure (often hidden between walls)

I noticed personally that KETO helps reduce food cravings by huge amounts. This video had great advice.

Your whiteboards always remind me of school lessons. But I rarely can remember any teachers getting the subject across so well then you do. Great job as always!

"out of whack"... that pretty much describes it. all my life I hardly know when I'm hungry till I'm starving or when I'm full till I'm over satiated

Dr.Berg, I recently watched a video talking about ketogenic diet not only decrease insulin but also leptin hormone. They said leptin is a hormone particularly in women that helps increasing metabolism. That’s why keto is not recommended for weight loss because it eventually lower metabolism, plateau ur weight loss progress. Could u pls do a video on keto-leptin relationship? Thank you from ur big fan.

I am overweight. I am rarely hungry and I eat one meal/per day most days. Well mostly during week days. I eat more when I am home on the weekends. Even then I don't eat due to hunger, I eat two to three meals at set times. Right now I am strong. No illnesses not medications. I can do 4 to 6 hour yard work marathons (with water breaks) or home repairs. I can climb endless stairs and lift heavy objects. But during the work week I sit, sit, sit. I have been working in various office since 1997. I know my number is coming and I won't be free from illness long if I don't get the weight off. I grow my own vegetables and in the late 90's early 2000's I was vegetarian for over 10 years. This is the beginnings of when I gained weight. Being vegetarian and not knowing what the hell I was doing. I gained so much weight and became protein deficient. Right now I am transitioning into eating everything fresh. Most things prepared from scratch. I'm not a food extremist but I have cut out most refined foods. I am eating foods that are in season more. And I am incorporating more fermented foods. I stay active on the weekends because I love tinkering in the yard. I workout at a gym and I push away from the desk more. Eating small meals more often through out the day has always been a struggle for me. I just don't think about food. I DO LOVE WATER ❤❤❤

thanks so much for your work, is inestimable for me as medical student who didn't catch up why the overweigh people can't stop eating. And as matter of fact, there are also underweigh people who don't product lot of leptin, but they still don't perceive hungry, that happens because there is a great production of keton bodies, which have the function of inhibt the hungry sensation. but there is an another thing: the fructose can inhibit the production of leptin, and so stimulate the hungry sensation but at the same time, the fructose incentivate the lipogenesis pathway, and so stimulate the leptin production

Thank you Doctor Berg I have listened to you and learnt much over the years, you are an absolute treasure 💙My stepdaughter is dangerously UNDERWEIGHT and struggles with stomach issues and gaining weight . She’s eats mash potatoes and lots of high carb plus up and goes to try and gain weight but the moment she stops and goes back to chicken, avocado, sourdough etc.... her weight stops or drops. Could you please do a video on what could cause eating / stomach problems that cause trouble gaining weight
