As a German speaking guy schadenfreude is my favourite word. It literally translates to damage-joy

In Japan it's "他人の不幸は蜜の味" which literally means "others' unhappiness tastes honey."

In Hungary we say "it's the most nicest kind of joy because it doesn't have envy in it". :)

In Chinese it’s 幸災樂禍. The literal translation is “lucky disaster happy misfortune”, it means being happy about someone’s misfortune. It translates into “gloat” in English actually 😅 The even worse version is 落井下石，it literally translates into “dropping a rock onto someone who fell down a well” 😅😅

In Nigeria, Igbo language calls it "Ikwa emo" meaning laughing at one's misfortune.
Had to think about it.

In Dutch, we call it “leedvermaak” which is translated as: the entertainment of suffering

In Russian it’s “злорадство” which is basically “evil joy”

In Swedish we call it "skadeglädje", literal translation meaning "hurt-happiness"

In polish my dad just resorts to saying "Nic tak nie cieszy jak nieszczęście bliźnich" which means "Nothing brings joy like the misery of your brethren." and he says it like all the time

In Sweden we have something similar I believe, it’s called “Skadeglädje” it quite literally translates to “injury happiness” “damage joy” lol.
It’s one of those thing where it’s like “oh I know I shouldn’t be happy at their misfortune….but i still am ;)”

In my language it’s called ‘leed vermaak’, it literally translates to ‘sorrow entertainment’.

English actually has "epicaricacy" as a synonym for schadenfreude! It's just very rarely used and schadenfreude is considerably more recognized and used
