i LOVE the Baba Yaga! i'm Eastern European and growing up, i always preferred the Baba Yaga character over the typical female protagonist. i mean, she lives alone, independent in the deep, dark, beautiful Eastern European forests, communicating and watching over the animals and Nature. i feel like she is the vilified manifestation of the independent woman archetype, who escapes the confines of society and lives her life on HER OWN terms. her ugliness is meant to be a cautionary tale, but honestly, it only drew me in more. she is also often associated with magical herbs that help induce abortions. i'd go as far as to say Baba Yaga is a feminist icon. oh, and her little house is so dope! 💜

In Poland children are scared of Baba Yaga because parents usually would say things like " If you're going to be naughty Baba Yaga will come and take you" or "Don't go too far away from home because Baba Yaga may catch you" As a child I was always fascinated by her house though.

I'm American, but I had a book when I was little that I LOVED which was about Baba Yaga. It was called Bony Legs and involved a young girl and the forest much like the story you told in this video. I don't remember everything from the book, but so much of it stands out to me because I had to have read it countless times as a kid. I remember the girl brings with her a mirror and a comb (and maybe one more thing?) when she's being pursued by Baba Yaga, she throws those items back behind her and they turn into giant obstacles which help her to escape. (For example, the mirror becomes a lake.) Because of that book, I'm always so interested and excited when I see people talk about her on social media. Such an interesting entity. Great job on this video! 💛

My maternal family is from Slovakia and I’ve just started trying to find more information about Slavic folklore to bring into my practice. This was very helpful, thank you!

There is also a Russian Horror movie that came out last year called Baba Yaga and it's now my favorite horror film. Definitely based on her darker stories but still really good. She is my favorite diety so I love seeing more people get interested in her!

Interesting topic Scarlet, Slavic myth which is little known to most of us, although its very fascinating. She also embodies the dark female archetype of the shapeshifter, witch, hag, sorceress, mage and crone in a very unique way. I didn't grow up with stories about Baba Yaga, just imagine how fun that would have been. There seems to be some variation of the Baba Yaga legend/story across eastern Europe from the Balkans to the Baltic. Not sure how many of you caught the 2019 Hellboy film, Baba Yaga made a cameo appearance in that flick, pretty wild.

Thank you for talking about Slavic folklore a bit more, it doesnt get enough attention in modern paganism and witchcraft. Great video. Blessed be from a fellow witch from Slovakia ❤️

Interesting fact about baba yaga: the image of Baba Yaga is supposedly based on the tradition of the ancient priests to take children from large families or to adopt orphans and abandoned children. These children were then brought up as priests or educated.
also, according to legends, Baba Yaga lures the main character into the stove, but he avoids it by deception. Luring into the stove is also a part of folk culture. Weak or premature babies were heated with the help of a stove, and adults could also climb inside the stove and wash themselves. thus, Baba Yaga wants to strengthen the body of the young prince

Love this episode about Baba Yaga. It’s difficult to find any old books on her at all here in America. My family comes from Germany and this is a story I was told as a girl

In college I played Pictures at an Exhibition by Russian composer Rimsky-Korsakov, there’s a movement that is called Baba Yaga. I remember it being the most interesting part of the piece

I actually remember watching a play of Baba Yaga back in elementary school. And it truly freaked me out! Lovely memory 😱😊

It seems the "Scary Old Hag" is innately archetypal. She shows up quite often during episodes of sleep paralysis. I myself have had sleep paralysis 5 times as a child and young adult, but experiened no anthropomorphic manifestations, though at one point it seemed as if there was an observing (nei STARING) presense all through the house, as if the house itself was conscious and staring.

Excellent video, Scarlet...I saved watching it for tonight on the eve of Dziady (Polish~Slavic Halloween), and what an awesome way to get into the mood. 🎃⛤ When I was young, my grandmother would speak of little spirits and the Holy Mother, tell nursery rhymes in Polish, and of course, warn of an "old witch" who lived in a hut where kids should never venture...thanks so much for this! 👻🇵🇱🤘
