The sixty-second day of the uprising, Sunday. The cease-fire is in effect. Eight thousand people leave the city center. According to the Germans, the evacuation was to include 200 to 250 thousand people.

Warsaw residents delay the decision to leave the city. In “Tygodnik Warszawski” in 1947, poet Jerzy Braun recalls the day this way: “When a deathly silence fell over the city marking the beginning of the armistice, crowds lined the streets. It was a strange feeling: to walk freely, without firing, through the 'fields of death,' over which rifle bullets had hitherto danced, grenade launchers' shells raised a dark dust. [...]”

On the night of October 1 to 2, the insurgents, with the participation of General Antoni Chruściel a.k.a. Monter, draft an agreement to cease fighting in the Warsaw area. A cease-fire is in effect until 7 pm, after which time the Germans begin artillery shelling of Srodmiescie again. Bullets fall mainly on Zlota, Jerozolimskie Avenue, Mokotowska, Nowogrodzka and Zurawia streets. Here dies one of the last victims of the uprising, Home Army soldier Stefan Kwasniewski.

Gen. Tadeusz Bór-Komorowski sends messages to the Chief of Staff of the Supreme Commander in London and to the commanders of the Home Army districts in the country: “Further fighting in Warsaw has no more chances. I have decided to end it. The terms of surrender guarantee the soldiers full veterans' rights and the civilian population humane treatment. I myself have to go with the soldiers into captivity.” [...]
