Fun fact: All those people who rejected you might be watching your videos to get out of those companies themselves :D

I've similar story. Recently I was interviewed and got architectural problem to solve. In couple of minutes I figured out solution and explained it to the interviewer. He said my solution was wrong and proceed to explain exact same solution that I offered. When I pointed to him that was exactly what I said, his response was "yeah, I guess you right". Day later I got email that I didn't get a job.

In an interview, always tell people what they want to hear.

If NeetCode has a million fans, then I am one of them. If NeetCode has ten fans, then I am one of them. If NeetCode has only one fan then that is me. If NeetCode has no fans, then that means I am no longer on earth. If the world is against NeetCode, then I am against the world.

In a world of lies, honesty does not pay.

The problem with that kind of question is you’re screwed either way. If you answer honestly they reject you. If you lie they reject you for being dishonest. It’s like the “would you still work here if you won the lottery” question

The other day I decided to make a list of all interviews I got: 20 total, 4 offers - 1 offer was a co-op, 1 was a temp contract, 1 offer rescinded due to covid, 1 offer I accepted in March and am still waiting for a security clearance to start (it’s December now). 2 cancelled at start of 2022 tech layoffs, Google and Amazon, I was on the last Amazon round and I was pretty confident about that one. Actually another cancelled with Google, had a phone screen with a recruiter that got laid off leading up to it.

So 20 total, 4 offers, 3 canceled, 13 rejections.

It's cool you gave the honest answer! No guarantee that you would have got the job if you had lied.. He could have asked why do you choose us over AMAZON?!! And at that time you might not come up with some reasonable answer.. Happy you walked out of the room an honest man!

I got asked in a phone call interview: "How many windows are in New york city?" I responded "Well a lot of windows, definitely more windows than there are buildings". That same evening I received a rejection email. Note I have never been to New York city, the company was based in Texas and I didn't understand how any of that was related to the role of "Python Developer".

It's a very healthy mindset of being able to learn from your mistakes and live with it

I think the optimal answer to the question is some variant of: “whoever gives me the better offer”. Perfectly honest answer that puts the ball back in their court

I have similar experience when interviewer asks me where you want to be in next 5 years I said I'm interested in AI and ML stuff something like ML Engineer. But the interview position is for backend software engineer.

From what I've gathered, generally a good answer is that you're looking for the best fit and to ask clarifying questions about the culture and work place to help your decision making process. Obviously there are too many variables to say this would work in every scenario, but I think it's an honest and flexible answer.

I learned this lesson after my third interview process. Job interviews are not for the candidate to stand out. Job interviews are to disqualify candidates from the other applicants.

I've been given one interview and have failed one interview. I've sent out like 100 applications.
It was absolutely destructive towards my self esteem. It was also for my personal #1 company for my #1 position. So my excitement was immeasurable, and I panicked.
I genuinely didn't think I would get an interview, so I had never done serious leetcode prep or anything similar up to that point either. maybe like 4 questions tops 💀

Tech interviews are so antagonistic, it’s really strange.

Previously as a mech E my interview process was a phone call and going out to lunch with my future team.

My your Microsoft story was practically a carbon copy of mine (but unlike you, I would've chosen Amazon over Microsoft if offered both)
