Why 'open' AI might be more marketing than reality

Among developers, Meta's latest open-source large language model, the Llama 2, is the hottest thing around. Wall Street also seems to be waking up to the proposition, with the stock far outperforming AI rivals like Google and Microsoft. But calling Meta's AI system "open source" is only part of the story. And the same might also apply to buzzy startups like Mistral and open source’s loudest advocates like Elon Musk. This week on Tech Check, we break down the promise of open source AI vs the myth.

I keep telling both friends and family; Now is the perfect time to own a Tech Stock, With everything going on and seeing how the world is been run by AI and all Tech is here to stay and you don’t want to miss it

OpenAi knows exactly what open source data they trained their Ai system on. They won't say for fear of being sued by those who own the publicly available data. Google essentially scrapes the Internet on a regular basis and no one sues them because they don't advertise that they are scraping/indexing.

2:24 that's not what model weights are. Model weights are the values of the parameters meaning the "knobs" that were learned from the data, representing the knowledge, patterns, and relationships. They are not "how much value the model assigns to pieces of training data".

Weights are not what she said it is. Model doesn't reference any pieces of training data. Weights are the model.

"Should we trust him?" LOL, good one. AI will be like anything else: the tiniest shreds of value will be atomized, enshittified, and milked to death...same old shareholder story

We need a fully decentralized AI model run alongside decentralized blockchains as a hedge against centralized models

How about they report on Meta's other huge open source project React. Do not remember the last time any company has paid for the right to use this essential framework. BTW which probably runs like 90% of all US company's web apps.

What do you mean? Should we trust open sourcing something? It’s bad when we have to. “trust“ one corporation to act as a guardian to a technology.

"we can't share our data".... no. Yeah you can. There are two options. Either 1 the data you used was legally obtained and open sourced and doesn't belong to you, or 2 the data you obtained was illegally gotten and doesn't belong to you. Either way. The data doesn't belong to you.

People are comparing this to google.... Google shares their sources. It's literally what they do. (links etc)

The model, and the nodes and code... That's theirs... They're welcome to keep that secret. but the data, most assuredly is not.

Models can't be open sourced. They are weights. It's like a road system with traffic lights but more complex. If you build a community with thousands of people, the roads will need to be changed to reflect it. The roads don't directly contain information about the housing. Not the greatest analogy but it's not what she said it is.

Caught this video on AI being more marketing than reality. Have to say, when it comes to real, effective tools for business, Mystrika outshines others! The analytics feature is top-tier, and the interface? Super solid. Cold emailing without Mystrika is like pizza without the cheese. Give it a shot!

This video raises a good point. Openness is great, but there are probably limitations to how much companies will truly share.

Great job on breaking down open AI hype! If you are dealing with cold email campaigns, trust me, Mystrika is a go-to. The pay-once-use-forever deal is what hooked me, and the multi-language warm-up pool makes outreach so effective. Their comprehensive analytics have really helped refine my targeting.

Can anyone provide the source code for Llama 2?

Right now I own stocks in Taiwan Semiconductor, Lam Research and AMSL Holding. I purchased all of them on 01-02-24. I'm up about 20% on these so far in about 10 weeks. These three stocks will be part of the backbone of AI 2.0. I'd like to invest in Nvidia and praise them for their massive success, but the market cap might be too high to make serious gains IMHO.

The big players are hitting AI hard. The word "open" may be misleading.

Yo! Loved the video discussion on open AI. You know what is really pushing boundaries? Mystrika! It is totally revolutionized my cold email strategy. The warmup pool feature is one of the best out there. Plus, they got this pay-once-use-forever scheme going on. Yo, CNBC, you gotta showcase this!

I think we should learn how to react to and protect ourselves from malicious actors, before making it publicly available.
A strong counterargument is that this approach could backfire, making malicious actors stronger.
However, I argue it is safer now than it ever will be in the future. We should keep it like that for some time.
Even if a single malicious actor can access the source code, they will need help from others to properly comprehend and advance it.
Right now is the best time we have been given to prepare ourselves.
