El Salvador President Nayib Bukele claims election victory | BBC News

President Nayib Bukele of El Salvador, credited with driving down gang violence in the Central American nation, said he has been re-elected.

The 42-year-old took to social media and said he had won 85% of the vote.

Preliminary results later showed him winning 83% with 31% of votes counted.

His popularity has soared following a crackdown on crime that has transformed El Salvador from one of the most violent countries in the world to one of the safest in Latin America.

He’s done a great job, I’m from El Salvador before he started cleaning the streets things were really bad gang members stole my aunt’s house including my mom’s which both are made out of bricks and mud basically. Now we got them back and we can breathe with not worrying about gangs trying to rob and killing family. Kids can play outside with calm, less crimes and clean streets.

Bukele has done more than just get rid of the gangs. He provided laptops for public school students, created public infrastructures, invested in education and health and even jailed politicians from his own political party when it was discovered they were embezzling public funds. ES hasn't had a break for many years. The civil war, then the massive deportations of criminals from the US that created the oppressive gang environment, and a lineup of corrupt politicians, have all made it easier to choose Bukele.

The best president El Salvador has ever had. He has brought hope and peace to the people of El Salvador. Over 94% of the country voted for this man. The rest of the world instead of criticizing him should give him a standing ovation for what he has accomplished in such a short time. Listen to the people who live in El Salvador and take their word for it, not the word of people who don’t live there. i’m salvadoran-american, before bukele we we weren’t as proud to say we were salvadoran due to the negativity,

“ohhh it’s dangerous there right”
“ms13! are you ms?”


to which i didn’t know how to reply without feeling a bit ashamed that it was true.
Now years later Bukele has transformed the country, it’s incredible.
Last month i traveled there alone with my brothers it was amazing,
something i wouldn’t have imagined when i was there a few years back.

Nayib Bukele is the president that every Latin American country deserves, a true hero in my book. As a Salvadorian and Honduran I have no doubt of this. Unless you are from there you won’t be able to understand how it felt to see your family finally being safe.
