I have worked on diesels most of my life and prefer the spin fuel filters for obvious ease of use. If you fill the canister 2/3 full with diesel, before you insert the filter, carefully pushing it in slowly, allowing air to escape, avoiding diesel spray coming out, you will almost eliminate all fuel knock from air in the lines in just a few minutes. This also saves the fuel pump from pumping dry, damaging the seals. The rest of your presentation was straight forward, simple easy instructions for the novice and I enjoyed seeing how you did things. Even an old dog like me, learns a trick everyday, to keep growing and to stay flexible.

I've done this on my '97 12 valve numerous times and I always check YouTube for a refresher. This was perfect! My difficulty has always been snaking the fuel filter housing out of the engine compartment, and then lining up the threads on the bolt for re-install. But it always seems to work. I'm not a fan of ford diesels but brother-in-law has a 94 with a simple twist off fuel filter on the tippy top of the engine. So easy by comparison!

Well done video. I noticed that when you were trying to remove the rag you hand your hand routed to keep it out of the camera frame, the you moved the camera. Well done with that. It shows that you were making an effort to maintain a view with the camera, while working in a tight space.

Thank you for the video and your efforts in making it.

Well done and thanks for the video. I found it to be informative and concise. All the info you need, no b.s. you don't need. I hate it when people try to include all manner of extraneous info into a video on a simple subject, which you didn't do and I thank you for that.

Thank you so much for this video, I just bought a 1997 ram 2500 and it's my first diesel truck, I know a little about diesels but I'm basically a complete newb to the cummins scene.

Great video. Easy to follow. I was actually trying to figure out priming procedures for 98 12 valve. I was trying to figure out why my fuel gauge wasn't working and unscrewed the lid on the top of the tank. That introduced air into the system and the truck wouldn't turn over. I'd say it took about 250 pumps after loosening the stud on the overflow valve. I only wish you'd given a wider shot of where the overflow valve was located, but I figured it out. It still took cranking it 4 or 5 times before it started. 2.5 feet 1 inch OD steel pipe did a great job of letting me pump the primer and still watch the bubbles coming out of overflow valve.

Good tutorial. In todays world with all the electronic gadgetry and complicity its nice to still have a good ol mechanical injection system.

Good video thanks for the tips. FYI the bleeder valve he talks about is up front on top of the injection pump. I would say top closer to the block. one line running to it, cant miss it!

Changed mine on my 1st gen. Filled the new filter with fuel before installing but still got enough air in the system that it quit running about 10 minutes after startup so cracked all the injector lines loose and cranked till fuel came out, retightened and good to go.

Didn't know if could come out in front of the injector pump. I've always dropped mine past the starter (kind of a pain). Thanks!

Partially fill up the fuel filter canister would have made it so much easier

He has a good point on making sure the lip on canister lines up with notch on top of fuel canister. Somebody did mine and did not align it and broke off lip that holds the valve when tighten it and had no valve handle or lip and you cannot buy the fuel canister new any where and hard to find one used.

When I replaced My filter I just used the primer on the lift pump until fuel came out of the top of the filter housing. Half a crank and fired right up.
