Turkey Hosts Ethiopia-Somalia Talks Over Somaliland Port Deal Dispute | Firstpost Africa

Neighbours and rivals Ethiopia and Somalia are sitting at a negotiating table to defuse tensions. Both sides are resuming talks on disagreements over a port deal Ethiopia signed with Somaliland- Somalia's breakaway region that has declared unilateral independence. Signed in January this year, the deal grants Ethiopia a 50-year lease on a naval base with access to Somaliland’s Berbera port. In exchange Ethiopia agreed to become the first nation to officially recognize Somaliland. However, the deal drew strong reactions from Somalia which called it an attack on its sovereignty. Somalia's close ally Turkey has tried to mediate between the neighbours. After hosting the first round last month, it is hosting another round of talks. How could the rift in the Horn of Africa end? Somaliland and Somalia have never shared a border or a history prior to the colonial era. Somaliland joined Somalia only to fight back against Ethiopia for their land that was given away by the Colonial Britain. However, we have regretted that union and paid dearly.
The issue of Turkey's mediation is also due to the fact that Somalia prefers other non-African nations over fellow African nations. They offered Qatar, UAE, EGYPT and also Turkey a military base. But refused when their own kind (sub saharan african) requested.
We are muslims but not arabs. We are proud black africans. The assertions made by Somalians are comparable to those made by white "Zimbabweans". In the same manner that the Western nations provided support to the white people in Zimbabwe, the Arabs are also extending their support to the Somalians. We will persist in our pursuit of justice, liberty, and, most importantly, self-determination.

Somalia has no control over it's so called "territory" outside of Mogadishu. Ethiopia will have to agree with somaliland if they want access to somaliland sea and Ethiopia knows that. Somalia is only a country on paper but in reality they have no control over many areas it claims

Somaliland has been independently functioning with its own constitution, and government institutions since 1991.

Somalia governments have no presence in the territory of Somaliland, and more importantly, the Mogadishu government does not effectively administer its capital city.

The issue remains deadlocked for the fact that Ethiopia would have worked agreement with Somalia if it's either has control over Somaliland or interested in the indian Ocean, though it's not viable to entertaining Hobyo as alternative.
