At 68 years old, and after about 100 films and 16 seasons on "The View," Whoopi Goldberg thinks there's still part of her you do not know. She's penned a memoir, "Bits and Pieces: My Mother, My Brother, and Me," which she calls a "thank you" to her late mother, Emma, and late brother, Clyde. Goldberg talks with correspondent Seth Doane about her remarkable path, from a housing project in New York's Chelsea neighborhood, to a retreat overlooking a peninsula on the island of Sardinia.

"CBS News Sunday Morning" features stories on the arts, music, nature, entertainment, sports, history, science and Americana, and highlights unique human accomplishments and achievements. Check local listings for CBS News Sunday Morning broadcast times.

Watching "The Color Purple" I could never absorb the tag line of Ceily being "ugly." When "Ms. Goldberg" smiles, to me it's like a beacon of affirmative light that commands the witness to smile back. I have enjoyed her creative performatives from a stand-up comedian to a hard working cop, resistant medium, singer witness hiding in a convent, host of the Oscars Award Show and clear speaking cohost of "The View." She has provided much to celebrate and will provide more to celebrate because God is in the habit of letting His light shine through His children. I am so very PROUD of Ms. Johnson/Goldberg and feel blessed that she shares!

She’s long overdue for her Kennedy center honors for her unparalleled contributions to comedy and entertainment for decades. She’s an EGOT winner btw

Whoopi Goldberg was the star in a small performance art scene in San Diego in 1981. I was in a small up and coming performance art group. I saw a number of her shows. I worked as a waitress in a music club to pay the rent so I got home by 3 am. A couple of times a week I’d shuffle around the corner to a small diner for breakfast and Karen Johnson was in there having her breakfast. Cause I’m from SF, I learned to give space to entertainers eating, so I never said too much more than good morning (yea, it was usually around noon ). In San Diego we got to see her work on a show that she moved to Berkeley to flesh out and polish and suddenly she was famous. She was so talented we all knew she’d be a star!

Fell in love with Whoopi in 1985 watching her one woman show on HBO. Almost 40 years later I feel exactly the same.
