If you’re asking me for advice AFTER you’ve fired me, it’s time to accept that you’ve made a mistake.

They only realize they need you once you are gone.

Hans Zimmer was born in 1957.
1957+18=1975
FMJ came out in 1987, based on a 1979 novel.

How does an 18/19 year old end up even in that job?

How do you end up working with Kubrick at 18?

Zimmer sure knows how to tell a tall tale. Besides getting the chronology wrong, Kubrick never studied drums with Gene Krupa. Great story, though - even though it's made up or exaggerated beyond believability.

Now, please excuse me - I'm busy giving riding lessons to Marie, Queen of Romania.

So Kubrick fired Zimmer in 1975 or about 10 years before FMJ started production? Firing a teenager that didn't even start his composing career from a movie that probably didn't even exist in Kubrick's mind at the time. I love Hans with all my heart, but age is creeping up to him

Hans Zimmer was 18 in 1975, and Full Metal Jacket came out in 1987. Wut.

Zimmer was born in 1957. Full Metal Jacket was made in 1985/86. Why does he keep saying he was 18 years old when he was fired from the film?

I actually like that they still talked after he fired Hans Zimmer. That means the decision wasn’t personal. Either that or he didn’t remember firing the guy. Lol

He can take great pride that he spoke to Stanley Kubrick and was called for his input!! That’s like Michelangelo calling you!

Never been a fan of Zimmer. I’m sure he’s a competent composer. But he’s rather confusing: when he was 18/19 the novel had not been published, let alone the movie script…

how would he only be 18 years old? He was born in 1957 and the movie came out in 1987 which would make him 30. The book only was released in 1979 when he was 22.

Kubrick famously fired composer Alex North on 2001, electing to use the temp tracks of classical music he’d put together as the film’s score instead. Which turned out to be a good decision, creatively — but it would have been nice to give North a heads-up, if only to spare the man the humiliation of showing up for the film’s premiere not knowing that his work hadn’t been used.

But there’s the rub. Kubrick was, without a doubt, a species of genius, though of a type so sui generis that it’s difficult to evaluate his work by the standards of other movies. But he was to all appearances not a very nice person, unless he took a real liking to you.

I was surprised at thus fact
HANS ZIMMER IS YHE KIND OF MUSIC GUY THAT WHEN I HEARD HIM A COUPLE OF TIMES IN MOVIETHEMES..I THEN FOUND OUT WHO HE WAS. HIS MUSIC IS MAGICAL INA DREAMY SORT OF WAY. HE CAN MAKE YOUR HEART BEAT FASTER. HIS MUSIC BRING TEARS. CAN LOSE YOURSELF IN JUST LISTENING TO INSTRUMENTS COMING ABD GOING.
I GUESS HIS OWN PATH CREATED HIS OWN GENIUS. LOVE HIM.

Zimmer at the time would’ve been well within his rights to either tell Kubrick to take a walk OR maybe he could’ve finagled the phone call into a quid-pro-quo opportunity. But then again he was only 18. Not sure how I would’ve reacted at that moment lol.

"Fuck it. I'll go score a movie about a slave who becomes a gladiator someday. And then I'll go score one of the greatest sci-fi movies set in space." -HZ, probably

Kubrick was famed for many a genius decision.
Firing Zimmer not being one of them.
