The carbon atom needs to have FOUR sigma bonds, which means it has to be sp3 hybridized. In this video, I show how it starts from its unhybridized electron configuration (1s2 2s2 2p2) and forms four hybridized sp3 orbitals. This means they can form tetrahedrally-arranged sigma bonds.
