The original has Yola singing the freedom riders verse...even more powerful!

They do a staggering cover of Fleetwood Mac's 'The Chain' live on Howard Stem. Well worth a look

Yeah, that one blew me away as well. I think I had chills almost the whole song and was practically on the edge of my seat waiting for the next lady's story. The darkness, the dread... overshadowed by the unwavering strength of determination and humble pride. This song is a testament to why we shouldn't be going around erasing histories...

Love them. Jason & the twins doing a great job in the background as well.

"They send my heart to die alone for a nation."

I hear the sad internal cry of the mother of a soldier.

i take it as women looking back through history and remembering some of the womwn that have came before and had to lose their lives or some part of their being to better life for the next generation and paying them respect a lot aspects of what we have

Wow that song blew me away. I think they were perhaps referring to the fact that the spirit within all of us remains undisturbed despite what tragedy, even death befalls the body. The spirit lives on infinitely that spirit comes back again and again inhabiting different bodies in different lifetimes to gain more lessons, to see more truth until unconditional love is mastered.
Sending this to my besties.

I love when existing songs can be so completely retooled, yet still remain the same, and somehow sound as unique, as the original.
Not an easy feat.
Not many have done it (not including spoofs, or comedic artists like the *Bob Rivers* or *Weird Al's* of the world) ...Twisted Sisters version of *Leader Of The Pack* comes to mind.
There's another I used to like as well, but I can't remember what it was right now. (If I remember later, I'll just come back and edit it in. :-) lol)

Bravo! I almost didn't listen based on the last song I heard by them, and I'm SO glad I gave this a chance. Beautifully written and performed.❤️

the stories they tell with their version of this song hits hard. and yes you cannot think about this without thinking of the original 4 horsemen and the Highwaymen. their harmonies are outstanding, and I have to admit I fid myself harmonizing with the ladies on Again and again and again

Yes! My request got an amazing reaction -- I just knew you'd love it! It's an incredible tribute to the women throughout history who were brave and revolutionary, who lost their own lives in service to others, but who live on in their children and in all of us -- they may not be in history books, but we are all more free because of them. And the writing! As the mother of two boys, the lines that always get me are "We carry the sons you can only hold." and "You send our hearts to die alone in foreign nations... But we will still remain/And we'll come back again."

Brandi Carlile and Amanda Shires wrote the lyrics. Jimmy Webb is also credited but I don't know if he actually wrote any of this version or if it's because he wrote the original.

My go-to music friend went to a festival, and we talked about the acts. Me: "The Dolly Parton duet sounds awesome." Him: "The Highwomen put me on the ground."

LOVE THEM and love the stone pony hat!

I'm sure you know this by now - this is a redo of the Highwayman co-written and blessed by Jimmy Webb himself. This version is other worldly.

100% agree this is a 10. I honestly cry everytime.

I think you'd be doing yourself a service to go bump 'Highwayman' by the Highwaymen up your list to add some context while this is fresh. This is a rewrite of that song but from the female perspective. Both are about the human sacrifice of establishing the Americas. Find a live version to pair nicely with it.

Also, Natalie Hemby in this group isn't a household name, but you love her. She's Miranda's go to co-writer.
