I’m not familiar with fabric screen printing, my professional specialty is printing on paper. The CMYK process is almost identical though, so some tips :
- take into account the color of the fabric you plan to print on. White shirts are a no brainer, but lightly colored fabrics will change the outcome. So if you plan to print on a light grey for example, don’t forget to reduce the black tones from a corresponding percentage;
- CMYK is great for photographic elements, but if your design is some vector art with few solid colors, you should use direct tones instead;
- I don’t know the specifics of wet on wet inks, but the superposition of too much ink on the same spot can cause drying problems. In paper print, the rule is that when you add all the CMYK values, the result shouldn’t exceed 300%. There are some separation settings that allows you to translate neutral greys in the image obtained by the mix of CMY into a single K value. That allows you to use less of CMY inks which are often more expensive than the K ones;
- One of the biggest advantage of CMYK is that you can print different visuals one after another without having to clean your tools;
- Advanced technique : Color separation can be done with other colors than CMYK, and use spot colors instead with a few adjustments. For example, you can use red instead of magenta if you adjust the other colors accordingly. This is useful if your art also includes a vector art logo which you’d like to be printed with the exact spot colors. In the model shown of the Argentina national football team, Cyan and Yellow could be substituted with the blue and yellow spot colors of Argentina’s flag team logo. It’s also possible in some cases, depending on the nature of your picture, to eliminate altogether a whole color pass with this technique. You can also have fun with special inks for creative effects;
- I don’t know if that works with screen printing, but you can also use color separation to reinforce Black values. In the comic books industry for example, all the black ink drawing lines are often also printed in cyan. The superposition of cyan and black gives a stronger Black result. It’s recommended though to make the Cyan lines a bit thinner than the black ones to limit the possibilities of imperfect alignment during the application.

Nice tutorial my friend .. thank you.
I have learned so much in the last few years. Patience is key. I messed up so many times but I enjoyed figuring out how. CMYK is absolutely my favorite method.. and yes .. the higher the quality of the design or image, the better the results .. actually .. I will not use a bad quality image because it just wont work and not even worth the time and effort.

Awesome. I've done CMYK, but a long time ago before inkjet. That was a pain and involved a lot of film processing and actual screens that produced the halftone. lol
