An ingenious proposal for scaling up marine protection | The Nature Conservancy

Island and coastal nations need to protect their waters to keep the oceans healthy. But they often have lots of debt and aren't able to prioritize ocean conservation over other needs. The team at The Nature Conservancy sees a way to solve both problems at once: restructuring a nation's debt in exchange for its government's commitment to protect coastal areas. Learn more about how "Blue Bonds for Conservation" work -- and how you can help unlock billions of dollars for the oceans. This ambitious plan is a part of the Audacious Project, TED's initiative to inspire and fund global change. (Voiced by Ladan Wise)

Great idea, I think governments should be taking environmental issues a lot more seriously though.

*Protecting coastal ares* from commercial fishing is very wise.
Those are the areas that produce the most fish in their early stages of life.
Later on the large fish go into deep ocean and then we can fish them there.

This is awesome! I keep seeing conservation efforts and ideas that are not going to make lasting change in the oceans. I'm so glad this plan got all the pieces in place to be a viable path forward!

Haven't watched yet, but any change to protect the oceans is good in my book, keep it up.

Just saw Seaspiracy on Netflix. This video brought back some hope that we can solve our ocean crisis.

We need this in the Philippines! Our coral reefs and marine biodiversity is seriously deteriorating. Yes, there ARE NGOs that act upon these problems but those aren't enough. I hope the next country this will be implemented in will be the Philippines, but I find it sort of improbable with our current administration.

Money is one thing but the people who actually do the work is the main thing.
It has always been the people who do the work get the least except for the backbreaking labor.
I think people who do the work should get the most money or at least a larger Chunk in the lip service people like management.

The quality of our air effects land and water. One large cruise ship can use up to 80k gallons of fuel in day leaving a carbon footprint in eight months that all the cars in the world do in one year. Last time I checked cruise ships are on the ocean. What do you plan to do about those?

Its november 2022 and just seen an article about Reef Brigades and the insurance purchase in Hawaii. As long as what you rebuild makes the best waves ever, than I am behind it. But it cannot in anyway remove or reduce shef spots. Sounds stingey, but surf tourism creates money. And of course the safety reefs provide to the islands and the wildlife is also quite important. And most all surfers respect that stuff naturally. Great idea-i hope it works and doesnt turn into some Scottish Titles scam or something like that.
