We Detectives Game from Tactic Games

Work together to keep the criminal behind bars in the game We Detectives. Each player chooses a detective character and, starting from their matching colored spot on the game board, takes turns moving around the board to collect evidence that will keep the bad guy in jail. Everybody wins if they find all the evidence before all the WePhone tiles have been played.

So to play, on your turn, draw a WePhone tile and follow the instructions. Move five spaces on the board, unless otherwise instructed. The WePhone tiles look like little smartphones with text messages on them. One might say, “The Judge is missing! Move to his location to pick him up.” So your goal would be to move your detective to the courthouse. Or the message might say, “Everything’s good! Move 5.” And then you just move five spaces wherever you need to go. Sometimes the tiles report a hazard, such as a lock malfunction, fire, dog attack, or car accident. You’ll need to place the appropriate hazard disc on the location where the hazard is occurring, and you won’t be able to access those locations until you travel to wherever you need to go, such as the fire station or the dog catcher, to fix the hazard. Or a WePhone tile might say that your magnifying glass or sunglasses were stolen, so you’ve got to get to the Bikers’ Den to retrieve those belongings before you can collect any more evidence. And sometimes the message calls for a meeting at the café, so all players immediately move to the café, and then move eight spaces from there.

When you get to a location with a piece of evidence or person you’re looking for, you can place the corresponding evidence tile on its designated spot in the center of the board. If all the evidence tiles have been placed before you run out of WePhone tiles, then all players win. But if some evidence is still missing when the last WePhone tile has been played, the criminal walks free.

I can't figure out the directions either. I'm a math professor and game collector, and so I don't think it's me. What does it mean to go to the place where the evidence is before you place it in the center of the board? How do you know what piece of evidence goes with which location? This was a Christmas present, but it might end up in the trash.
